9 Unanswered Questions After The Night Court Season 3 Finale
The Night Court season 3 finale aired as an hour-long block of two episodes, but that wasn’t enough time to answer some major questions.
I chatted with Marsha Warfield about her appearance in Night Court season 3, episode 17, Roz's relationship with Gurgs, and what she imagines is in store for Roz and Loretta.
This interview was conducted prior to Night Court's cancellation.
Warfield's Relationship With Lacretta Mirrors Their Night Court Dynamic
"I'm more than willing to be there for her as Roz or Marsha."
How does Roz feel when she is first given the task of creating a welcome video for the court?
Marsha Warfield: Roz is kind of like, "Well, okay." It doesn't really cost her anything to do that, so, she's like, "Okay, you want me to do it? Let's do it. I'm on the clock. [Laughs] You're paying me or whatever." Roz had no problem helping Gurgs. She and Gurgs have an auntie-niece kind of relationship. She respects her and wants her to have all the best. She has no problem mentoring Gurgs, but she doesn't really think Gurgs needs mentoring.
So then what is she thinking when Dan comes in with his ideas and starts commercializing this court video?
Marsha Warfield: That's Dan. He does that. We work around him. He's going to do Dan stuff.
I love that Gurgs tells Roz. "You capture everything that this place is." I thought it was such a beautiful sentiment with you starring in the original Night Court. What do you think it is about Roz, and even Gurgs, that captures the show?
Marsha Warfield: Some things are just not really quantifiable or tangible. From the very beginning, Marsha and Lacretta had an affectionate relationship, and so Roz and Gurgs have the same.
[It's this] older woman and this young woman that's doing the job she used to. She's there for her and rooting for her. I wish her all the best, and if she needs me or wants advice or just somebody to say, "Come on, girl, you got this." I'm more than willing to be there for her as Roz or Marsha.
Warfield Was Pleasantly Surprised By Roz's Coming Out In The Night Court Reboot
"She had a wedding among her friends and colleagues, and it was nice and not exploitative, or the butt of a joke."
We only saw a glimpse of this welcome video, but they said that it's four hours long. What else do you imagine went into that?
Marsha Warfield: I'm sure Roz took everybody on a tour of everything—holding, all the courtrooms, and the evidence lockers, and made them read the case files and took them to lunch.
How do you think married life is treating Roz and Loretta? She wasn't in this episode, but I'm hoping they're going strong.
Marsha Warfield: I think they're just a wonderful couple. I'm sure they've settled into a life together until something happens and threatens the relationship, as it always does on Night Court.
[Maybe] another woman, because we have established that Roz doesn't really trust her because she had some other relationships. So who's to say maybe one or the other of them becomes somebody else's object of affection? Who knows?
Is there a storyline from the original Night Court that you always had in mind for Roz, but you wanted to explore in the reboot?
Marsha Warfield: Coming out. The fact that Roz came out is probably the biggest thing that I could have hoped for. And to have her not just come out, but have it be like we were talking about. She had a wedding among her friends and colleagues, and it was nice and not exploitative, or the butt of a joke. I think they've already given me that. I enjoyed it. I was very pleasantly surprised.
