Susan reveals that she dated a lawyer who worked in the Manhattan courtroom about a year before her son was born. Abby appears to be in shock, suddenly noticing an uncanny resemblance between Dan and her boyfriend. The episode ends with Flobert coming to the same realization and telling Abby that Jake may be Dan's biological son (and that he's out of cake pops).

Larroquette Teases Psychological And Spiritual Changes For Dan In Night Court Season 3

"There's a lot of opportunity for comedy and heartfelt emotions."

Dan and Jake paralleling each other in the Night Court season 2 finale

ScreenRant: John, I need to ask you about that giant cliffhanger we left off on at the end of season 2. There's a possibility that Dan is a father. What can you tease about that going into season 3?

John Larroquette: If you watch season 2, you know it ended with the possibility of Abby's boyfriend being the offspring of Dan Fielding and an old love from the 80s, and we will discover more of that in the first two episodes of the third season. I'd rather not get into it any further than that, so people are surprised by the outcome, but it's a possibility.

And psychologically and spiritually, Fielding goes through some changes during the process of wondering until the facts are known. So we'll see. And it is fun too. It's fun because of Abby's emotional tie to it as well. There's a lot of opportunity for comedy and heartfelt emotions within that whirl of, "What happens if...?"

CinemaBlend: To build on that, John, did you know that this was a possible cliffhanger when Jake was introduced, and what did you think of Ryan Hansen being cast as your possible secret son?

John Larroquette: Yeah, being an executive producer on the show, I'm pretty much aware of all the areas that we're going to be going into and Dan Rubin and I talked a lot about it. When Ryan first appeared as the HR fellow in that episode, he had great comic timing, and he's a very handsome fellow and fun to be around.

He's a real player. I learned more about him from my youngest son, Benjamin, who's also the composer of Night Court. He was a real fan of his on Party Down, and so he clued me in and said, "You've got to watch him." And so I watched his work there and became a fan of his, as well.

Nyambi Hopes Wyatt Will Work Through His Feelings In Night Court Season 3

"It'll be more pain and anguish, which is always fun."

Nyambi Nyambi at a store in Night Court season 2

ScreenRant: Nyambi, Roz's wedding was a bit tough on Wyatt. It brought up some uncomfortable feelings about his divorce. Are we going to see him work through that and start to move forward this season?

Nyambi Nyambi: I hope so. I hope we get to see me work through it, because it'll be more pain and anguish, which is always fun. Always fun. But what I love so far is just how much of a dad you get to see him be. I think you'll get to see me work through that and work through not being the same sort of cool, fun-loving single man that I once was before kids. Certainly before I had a wife and then did not have one.

John Larroquette: We got a little hint of that, didn't we? With comic-con? The fact that Wyatt had all these great plans of what a night it was going to be, and he winds up dressing in the costume that his daughters made him get into. So he is definitely a dad, and I certainly see an episode where we're going to see more of that. Where the man of him comes out, but yet the dad is prominent and has to be used.

Nyambi Nyambi: My superpower will be "dad!"

CinemaBlend: Nyambi, one of the really fun episodes last season was when you were working with Melissa Fumero for your kind of dysfunctional relationship. Do you see him being any more ready for a relationship in season 3?

Nyambi Nyambi: No, I feel like it gets worse and worse. The further I get away from my twenties, the worse it gets. When I see basketball players, whenever they were at their greatest, their hairstyles stuck right there. So then when they're forty, fifty, sixty, they have the same hairstyle from when they were at the height of their game. I feel like that'll be me. Whatever I was at the height of the game, I'm still trying to give that, and it's just not working.

ScreenRant: Could we meet Wyatt's kids or his ex-wife this season?

Nyambi Nyambi: That's a great question. If I was executive producing, I'd be able to tell you. I wish we had an executive producer here to let us know. [Looks at John Larroquette] I hope so.

John Larroquette: The reality is that we don't think that far ahead. There's no big Bible arc on this particular show. It's like, "What is going to happen this week?" And certainly stories linger, and they bleed over into each other, as we found with the cliffhanger from the second season into this. And even the first show of this season is still a cliffhanger. Even the second show of this season, nothing is truly resolved in the premiere episode.

But as we sit around talking about ideas for shows, all of this will come up. But there's no like, "Oh, in Episode 7, we're going to meet Wyatt's ex-wife." We don't think quite that far ahead because you're working so much on the show that you're working on that week to make it as funny as possible. Those ideas come to you and then you write them down and put them on the side and put them on a board somewhere and talk about them as we go down the line.

But all of those things we've set up are ripe for exploration. Wyatt's children, Wyatt's ex-wife, God knows who, but that could be a humdinger. All of a sudden she shows up, and preferably as the defendant, and she's actually been arrested for something, and then we go from there. Let's see what happens. Nothing like that has been truly discussed yet.

Larroquette Doesn't See A Romance Happening Between Dan And Julianne In Night Court Season 3

"We'll discover what that is as we move along, but for the moment, she and Fielding are now cohorts."

Julianne and Dan next to each other looking sternly downward in Night Court

ScreenRant: We know that Wendie Malick will be the new prosecutor this season. John, what will that complicated relationship look like now that Dan and Julianne will be facing off in the courtroom?

John Larroquette: Yeah. Wendie Malick, who's ing the cast as a permanent member now, did a couple of guest shots with us and was sort of a Fielding's partner for a little bit in weirdness. They never really hooked up, but they almost did. Obviously, as she becomes a series regular, some of that insanity has to be muted because we don't want a real crazy person amongst our family.

But she's still very acerbic and witty and has her own game to play. We'll discover what that is as we move along, but for the moment, she and Fielding are now cohorts, as it were. They are co-workers, and I think they will be co-conspirators to some degree. To what degree, I don't know. Certainly, I don't see a relationship occurring between them for a long time, if ever, just because you want to keep that option open for as long as one can.

CinemaBlend: Heading into season 3, do you think Dan would rather see Julianne on a daily basis or the Wheelers on a daily basis if he had to choose one?

John Larroquette: That's a good question. I would think probably Julianne on a daily basis because one can only eat so many pigs' feet, and I have a feeling that's all the Wheelers can cook.

Larroquette Wanted To Address An Original Night Court Storyline

"I helped build that response very diligently because I wanted to honor both Christine [Sullivan] and Markie [Post]."

Dan, Roz, and Katie in the Night Court season 2 finale

CinemaBlend: In the season 2 finale, there was a lovely subplot about Christine Sullivan. John, as an executive producer, how involved were you in how that was presented to the audience?

John Larroquette: Yeah, I was. How can I talk about this without being too emotional? I wanted to pay homage to Christine Sullivan, the character, and figure out how best to do that and not to take up too much time or too much history. The original show was never allowed to do a true end episode. There were feelings that maybe it could be sold somewhere else. I wasn't a producer then. I don't know all the ins and outs, but we weren't allowed to do a true goodbye episode like Cheers did, et cetera.

The one thing that happened in the episode was that Christine Sullivan leaves, Dan Fielding says, "I'm following her. I've got to be with her," and Harry goes, "What do you mean? My Christine?" And so there's this triangle that was there for a while. Anyway, we find out that Fielding indeed did follow her, and Fielding indeed did begin a relationship of sorts with her, that her heart softens some toward him, and that Fielding himself comes to realize he's not good enough for her and leaves.

And so in the final episode, we see Christine's sister show up at Roz's wedding. And so there's a confrontation between the two of them. I helped build that response very diligently because I wanted to honor both Christine and Markie [Post] by hiring Gigi Rice, who in a previous incarnation actually played Markie's sister in another movie. They're very close, and so we talked a lot about it.

I even talked to Markie's widower about it, Michael, to get his permission to even bring her up. I wouldn't do it if he thought that it would've been in bad taste. There were a lot of wheels churning in order to have those moments to allow Fielding to express his love for Christine Sullivan. It was a collaborative effort on a lot of people's parts to get that storyline done.

ScreenRant: Speaking of paying homage, there was a very emotional scene between Dan and Abby in season 2. He essentially gives her a message from her father. How was filming that with Melissa and touching on another beloved character in that way?

John Larroquette: It's always very touching. That's how the show began, with her showing up at Fielding's Door and being the daughter of Harry Stone. And we've had slight moments about that when the emotions touched each other because of their relationship with Harry.

That particular moment was Fielding trying to make as little of it as possible, but there was a connection between the three of them, in essence, sort of the Harry Houdini, "If there is an afterlife, I'll send you a message, darling" kind of moment. But we don't want to get maudlin about those interactions and those reminiscences. We want to make fun of it but also have it be heartfelt, and I think that was.
