Nobody. Keanu Reeves debuted as John Wick in 2014 and the franchise quickly became an overnight sensation. The film's combination of sleek action sequences and smart world building helped the film become a hit. Kolstad has gone on to write both sequels and a John Wick 4 is in the works.
Kolstad formally began working on Nobody in 2018, prior to the release of John Wick: Chapter 3. The film, which will release on March 26, stars Bob Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell, a suburban dad who feels under-appreciated by his family. Unbeknownst to his wife and kids, Hutch used to be a high-powered assassin and he is soon drawn back into this world when his family is put in danger. Early looks at Nobody have shown a mix of John Wick-esque action blended with the humor Odenkirk is known to bring to most of his roles. Comparisons between the two films, as well having the same writer, have led many to wonder if Hutch and John Wick will meet one day.
That meeting may not be in the cards, though. Kolstad tells CB that he sees the movies as separate entities with different qualities that may never meet. The writer says that, if the two were to meet, he wouldn't want to communicate a desperation in bringing the two characters together just for the sake of doing so. Kolstad says that if the two ever were to meet that it would be a brief encounter and not a crossover event that would see the two fighting side-by-side.
You know, honestly, they're so different. Growing up, I loved Narnia, Lord Of The Rings, Star Wars, and Dungeons and Dragons. They're very, very different creatures but they're very, very, very similar. Right? I think these are two very separate things that if they were to ever converge at a certain point, it would be the two of them walking through an airport and just giving each other a nod.
I think that's much more interesting because at a certain point, when worlds collide, as a guy who loves these kinds of movies, it always feels desperate at that point. And in none of these things do I ever want to find ourselves in a desperate place. I would rather it be a little bit of a wink and a nod to each other and the audience.
Cinematic universes are clearly all the rage now - the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the most successful franchise in history and many companies are attempting to replicate this, making the idea to bring together John Wick and Hutch from Nobody is likely a tempting one. Kolstad acknowledges they could be in the same universe, but his reticence to bring them together for a buddy-action adventure seems smart. It's not necessary to bring disparate films together to tell good stories and forcing that on an audience that doesn't have the emotional investment like they do in the MCU could lead to failure.
Of course, the decision likely won't be made until the studio gets an idea of how successful Nobody can be. If the film turns out to be a smash hit, all bets could be off the table and, depending on who owns the rights to the characters, it could be out of Kolstad's control. Still, the tone of both Nobody and John Wick seem to be vastly different - Reeve's assassin is much more straight-faced while Odenkirk looks to be bringing some levity to the genre - so how those two worlds collide would be anyone's guess.
