The Amazons, who count Wonder Woman and Nubia among their ranks, are some of the fiercest warriors in the DC Universe, inspiring awe and respect in the outside world. Their reputation is well deserved, and in Nubia and the Amazons #1, on sale now in print and digital, DC reveals the secrets of how new Amazons are created and integrated into their society.

In the DC Universe, the Nubia has been appointed Queen of the Amazons in Hippolyta’s absence and one of her first acts as Queen is to preside over the initiation of new Amazons.

The issue opens with both a recap of the Well’s history and its role in both the creation of the Amazons as well as Nubia hundreds of years ago. In the present day, the Well opens once again, giving birth to several new Amazons.  Readers follow the new Amazons as they find their way in this new society; they receive extensive training in not only weapons and hand-to-hand combat, but also in how to build and make things as well education in the arts. It culminates with a gigantic feast, in which each woman reveals her Amazon name and is formally welcomed into Amazon society. The issue ends on a dark note, however, implying that something evil is brewing and the Well of Souls is somehow involved.

New Amazons receive training

The glimpse the first issue provides into Amazon society is fascinating. It shows not only the Well of Souls and its importance in creating new Amazons, but also how they learn to fit into their new society. The new recruits are encouraged to find and develop their ions and given ample opportunities to do so. The ceremony welcoming these women affirms their new identities in a loving and positive way. These women, who fell victim to the horrors of domestic violence have now found a place where they can live in peace, free to be themselves.

Fans know the Amazons as brutal warriors, but there is much more to their society than that. Wonder Woman and Nubia have shown they are also artists, scientists, and philosophers. Amazon society is a complex and fascinating one, and in Nubia and the Amazons #1, gives readers a closer look at it.
