Over the past 25 years, One Piece has created its own empire of media content starting with its popular manga and anime series and expanding into numerous other forms of entertainment, the latest of which is the new JRPG One Piece Odyssey. Odyssey is not the first game based on the One Piece world, but it is the first to be officially labeled as a JRPG with classic turn-based combat. The popularity of One Piece combined with the high-quality details that Bandai Namco Entertainment included throughout Odyssey has led to a successful launch and leaves some fans wondering what is next.
[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for One Piece Odyssey.]Since its release, reviews for the game One Piece Odyssey have been positive from both fans of One Piece and of the JRPG genre. The ending scene of the game, as well as the immense amount of content already existing in the One Piece universe, leaves room for future games to follow Odyssey and allow them to create a JRPG franchise that could rival games like Dragon Quest. The JRPG adventures of the Straw Hats may just be beginning.
One Piece Odyssey's Ending Sets It Up Perfectly For Future One Piece JRPG Games
At the end of One Piece Odyssey, Adio flies away swearing that though he lost to the Straw Hats, he will not stop trying to achieve his goals, leaving the door open for a new story with him as an antagonist once again. Lim and the Cubes also present many foundations for additional narratives to be built, either with Adio or in their own separate story. Add to these possible storylines the immense amount of content in the world of One Piece and there's a never-ending amount of content for new Straw Hat stories. The long history of One Piece Odyssey's anime and manga has proven that this series has what it takes to become a long-running JRPG franchise.
One Piece Odyssey's Producer Is Open To Making A Sequel
Rei Hirata, the producer of One Piece Odyssey, is open to the idea of creating more One Piece games in other genre styles so that there are different experiences for players. Despite that, however, he has also said in an interview with Noisy Pixel, that the received from the fans will factor heavily into the decision whether to make a sequel to One Piece Odyssey. The JRPG genre fits well with the thematic style of the anime and manga adaptations of the One Piece world and, based on reviews so far, the likelihood of more games in that style looks promising.
One Piece Odyssey has not been out long, having released on January 12, yet has already received a very warm reception from players. Despite not being canon, One Piece Odyssey already fits in the timeline of the anime and manga, meaning there are plenty of other ways to slot this new JRPG franchise into One Piece's mainline story. The attention to detail that the creators provided helped to make it a solid entry into the genre, and the success it is seeing could very well lead to a One Piece JRPG franchise.
