Summary

  • There is a definitive hierarchy of power among the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • Characters like Usopp, Nami, and Chopper are consistently among the weakest of the crew.
  • Conversely, Sanji, Zoro, and Luffy are consistently among the strongest of the crew.

As the main characters of the series, the Straw Hat Pirates are undoubtedly among the strongest characters in One Piece. The Straw Hats are constantly going up against some of the strongest characters in the setting, especially after entering the New World, and no matter how tough things get, they always come out on top and have now even been recognized as the crew of an Emperor.

There are very few groups in One Piece stronger than the Straw Hat Pirates, and of course, they’re also all powerful as individuals. Between Devil Fruits, Haki, and a variety of unique skills and abilities, every individual member of the Straw Hat Pirates stands as one of the strongest characters in all of One Piece, and that, of course, leads to a hierarchy of power among them.

One Piece's Straw Hat pirates jumping in the air and giving a big cheer together with their ship behind them.

The places where some characters stand are more obvious than others, but regardless, putting everything together paints a great picture of where everyone stands within the group.

10 Usopp Is Still The Weakest Member Of The Straw Hat Pirates

The sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates

Usopp first ed the Straw Hat Pirates after they helped save his village from Kuro and the Black Cat Pirates. While the Straw Hats initially just wanted him along because they were friends, he was quickly made the crew’s official sniper, dealing with enemies with slingshots armed with various tools, most notably powerful plants called Pop Greens.

Usopp has grown a lot as a fighter in One Piece, with his bag of tricks reaching its peak of power with Pop Greens and Usopp even becoming one of the only Straw Hat Pirates to know Observation Haki. Unfortunately, even with how much Usopp has grown, everyone else has grown more, so Usopp remains the weakest member of the Straw Hat Pirates even after almost 30 years. That’s unlikely to change anytime soon, but at the very least, Usopp can still contribute to fights more often than not.

9 Nami Has Gradually Become One Of The Straw Hats’ Most Versatile Fighters

The navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates

Nami is the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates, and when she first ed the crew, she didn’t have much to offer in the way of combat besides some skills with a bo staff. During the Alabasta arc, however, Usopp invented the Clima-Tact for Nami, a staff that was initially designed just for party tricks and was reworked by Nami into a tool that could weaponize the weather to incredible effect.

Nami is another character generally regarded as one of the weakest of the Straw Hats. As powerful as the Clima-Tact is, it’s often ineffective against some of the stronger enemies in One Piece, so Nami often struggles to win fights on her own. That being said, Big Mom’s homie Zeus fusing with Nami’s Clima-Tact made her strong enough to defeat Ulti and damage S-Shark, so she’s at least stronger than Usopp when compared to other Straw Hats.

8 Brook Hasn’t Had Nearly Enough Time To Shine In One Piece

The musician of the Straw Hat Pirates

Brook is the musician of the Straw Hat Pirates and a talking skeleton thanks to the effect of his Revive-Revive Fruit. When Brook first ed the crew, he fought solely with powerful fencing and iaido skills, but after the timeskip, Brook learned how to harness the soul-bases abilities of his Devil Fruit to gain the powers of astral projection and ice manipulation.

Brook is certainly a powerful fighter, and that’s especially true after the timeskip when he gains his ice powers. Unfortunately, Brook tends only ever to fight the weaker of any group the Straw Hats go up against, and because of how late into the story he ed the crew, Brook rarely ever has a chance to get into a serious fight, and because of that, he ends up ranking on the lower scale of the Straw Hat Pirates.

7 Tony Tony Chopper Is The Strongest Of The Straw Hat Pirate’s Weaklings

The doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates

Tony Tony Chopper is the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates and a reindeer who gained human intelligence after eating the Human-Human Fruit. With his years of medical expertise, Chopper developed a special drug called the Rumble Ball to gain additional Zoan transformations, and after the timeskip, he gained control of his deadly Monster Point, thus giving him a more reliable way of contributing to fights.

Chopper was once viewed as being part of the “Weakling Trio” alongside Nami and Usopp, and decades later, Chopper is still one of the weaker of the crew. That being said, Chopper’s transformations have always been shown to be powerful, as not only could Chopper slightly damage Queen with Monster Point, but most recently, Chopper’s Guard Point was strong enough to block attacks from Saint Saturn. Chopper might not be that powerful, but his power still shouldn’t be underestimated.

6 Nico Robin Is The Straw Hat Pirates’ Most Underrated Fighter

The archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates

Nico Robin was introduced as Miss All Sunday of Baroque Works, but she became the Straw Hat Pirates’ resident archaeologist after Luffy saved her life near the end of the Alabasta arc. Robin’s fighting style revolves around using her Flower-Flower Fruit to duplicate her limbs, and after the timeskip, she even added elements of Fishman Karate into her fighting style.

Robin is the Straw Hat Pirate with the least amount of fights, especially one-on-one fights, but that doesn’t make her any less powerful. The versatility of Robin’s Flower-Flower Fruit always lets her deal out a lot of damage to her opponents, and in the Wano arc, Robin used her new Demonio Fleur technique to defeat Black Maria, one of the strongest of the Tobiroppo. That’s probably the best showing of Robin being a powerful fighter, even if she doesn’t get many opportunities to show off.

5 Franky Is Consistently One Of The Straw Hat Pirates’ Best Fighter

The shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates

Franky is a bombastic cyborg who, after initially antagonizing the Straw Hat Pirates, ed the crew as their resident shipwright. Franky’s cybernetics give him incredible offensive and defensive abilities, and after the timeskip, he made himself even more powerful with laser technology and a giant mech suit to fight in.

While Franky might not get into as many fights as some of the other Straw Hats, he’s always been one of the strongest fighters in the crew. Franky’s cybernetic abilities have always let him hold his own against some of the toughest of enemies, and most recently, Franky proved his strength by defeating Sasaki, one of the strongest of the Tobiroppo. Franky is probably the Straw Hat with the most consistent showings in the series, and that’s unlikely to change as One Piece heads toward its conclusion.

4 Jimbei Has Always Been One Of The Strongest Characters In One Piece

The helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates

Jimbei is a master of Fishman Martial Arts and a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea whom Luffy befriended while they fought to save Ace from execution. Luffy asked Jimbei to the crew after the timeskip, but due to his obligations to Big Mom, it wasn’t until the raid on Onigashima that Jimbei could officially become the Straw Hat Pirates’ helmsman.

Jiimbei has always been one of the strongest characters in One Piece. Jimbei’s mastery of Fishman Martial Arts made him one of the stronger of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, and that level of power has been maintained through things like Jimbei’s handling of Big Mom and his defeat of Who’s-Who, the strongest of the Tobiroppo. Jimbei is easily one of the strongest of the Straw Hat Pirates, and his ing the crew has more than lived up to the hype.

3 Sanji Never Fails To Be One Of The Straw Hat Pirates’ Best Fighters

The chef of the Straw Hat Pirates

Sanji is the chef of the Straw Hat Pirates and the last person to the crew before they entered the Grand Line. Sanji fights using powerful kicks further strengthened by Armament Haki, and he can even set his legs on fire to further increase his power and set his opponents ablaze.

One of the biggest debates in One Piece is who’s stronger between Zoro and Sanji, and while it’s not by much, Sanji should be considered the weaker of the two. While Zoro almost always fights the characters who are second-in-command to the main villain, Sanji’s opponents are almost always right below Zoro’s in power and rank, so Sanji can be considered the third-strongest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. That being said, Sanji's physical strength and incredible speed make him virtually untouchable and still leave him a force to be reckoned with.

2 Roronoa Zoro More Than Earns His Place As Luffy’s Second-In-Command

The first mate of the Straw Hat Pirates

Roronoa Zoro is the first mate of the Straw Hat Pirates and Luffy’s most loyal crewmate. Zoro is a master of the Three Swords Style, a style of sword fighting that involves holding a sword in his mouth, and his skills are taken even further after the timeskip thanks to him becoming the apprentice of Dracule Mihawk, the world’s greatest swordsman.

One of the biggest constants in One Piece has been that Zoro is the strongest of the Straw Hat Pirates after Luffy. Zoro’s sword techniques are always packed with incredible power that few can rival, and in the Wano arc, Zoro became even more powerful by both mastering Oden’s sword and learning how to use advanced Conqueror’s Haki. Those factors and others make Zoro one of the strongest characters in the crew and One Piece, in general, and he’s only going to get stronger as the story keeps going.

1 Monkey D. Luffy Has Always Been The Straw Hat Pirates’ Best Fighter

The captain of the Straw Hat Pirates

Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of One Piece and the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. With the creative abilities of the Gum-Gum Fruit and the raw power of Haki, Luffy has an incredibly diverse set of abilities, and nearly every story arc sees him doing something to improve his abilities as he gets closer to his goal of becoming the Pirate King.

There is no reason to doubt the idea that Monkey D. Luffy is the strongest fighter in the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy being the protagonist naturally inclines him to be the strongest of the heroes, but between his advanced Conqueror’s Haki, his immensely powerful Gear 5 form, and how Luffy’s gone on to become one of the Four Emperors, that idea is more than justified. Overall, Luffy is undoubtedly the strongest Straw Hat Pirate in One Piece, and there’s no reason for that to ever change.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is a multimedia franchise that began as a manga series and follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as led by Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy, an enthusiastic pirate with a thirst for adventure, is afflicted by a mysterious curse that gives him various powers he uses to protect himself and his friends. The manga eventually gave way to the anime series, with the two being some of history's longest-running anime and manga series. Along with over fifty video games made over the years, the series entered the live-action world with Netflix's 2023 adaptation.
