However, during Rebecca Yarros' interview with the Fantasy Fangirls Pod, the author confirms that Drake's orange kitten—who he aptly named Broccoli—isn't in any danger.

During the quest squad's time on Zehyllna in Onyx Storm, the group plays a game of "gifts"—in which the locals present each member with a cryptic gift. Violet receives a broken com, Dain receives a slap to the face, but Drake Cordella, Cat's cousin, receives what the locals call "the claw," which turns out to be a sweet orange kitten. This kicks off the feline's storyline. While it isn't featured much, Brocolli's short introduction in Onyx Storm propelled him to become a fan-favorite character. Thankfully, Yarros' interview confirms the kitten will remain safe throughout the series.

This revelation comes about after the Fantasy Fangirls directly asked Yarros if she could share one other character that will survive besides Jessinia. While she obviously refused to divulge that information, when asked about Broccoli, Yarros stated she's "not going to kill a cat". This has eased many fans' minds, as the latter Onyx Storm narrative does not again feature Broccoli or discuss his whereabouts. This has led many readers to wonder if Broccoli survived the events of Onyx Storm's wild ending, which Yarros has now confirmed he has.

Onyx Storm's ending is chaotic and full of shocking twists and surprises, so it's no wonder that readers found themselves worrying about Broccoli's fate—especially when the cat failed to reenter the narrative after his initial introduction. Aside from Jessinia, Yarros hasn't confirmed who will or will not survive to the end, so it's a relief to learn that Broccoli's future is secured. Sadly, in tandem with Yarros' comments on Broccoli, the author revealed some troubling information about the series' dragons and their less certain fates.

That said, Yarros' comments most certainly hint that the series will see even more dragon deaths.
