It’s one of several original Christmas movies releasing on Netflix this season, and this particular entry boasts an impressively-talented cast. The film stars Lindsay Lohan and Pretty Little Liars’ Ian Harding as the romantic leads, alongside actors like Kristin Chenoweth, Tim Meadows, and Chris Parnell.

The film centers on Logan (Harding) and Avery (Lohan), a pair who grew up together and dated several years before a very bitter breakup. Many years later, the duo are unexpectedly thrown back together after arriving to spend Christmas with their new significant others’ parents, only to discover they’re dating siblings. They do their best to conceal this fact from the family, particularly judgemental mother Erica (Chenoweth), but attempting to keep the secret quickly begins to unravel.

Screen Rant interviewed Lindsay Lohan, Ian Harding, and Kristin Chenoweth to discuss crafting an unconventional Christmas rom-com, Chenoweth’s character’s motivations, and the cast’s reactions to a surprising end reveal.

How The Duo Formed Their Awkward-Yet-Loving Dynamic

Screen Rant: I think part of what makes this rom-com so fun is it's not just a typical meet-cute sort of thing; it's like a re-meet and it's deeply uncomfortable for everyone involved. Lindsay and Ian, what was it like creating that dynamic that's multi-layered in that way, where it is tense and awkward, but also there is that remaining underlying care there that's left over after all those years?

Lindsay Lohan: I think because our characters have such a strong backstory, they grew up together, they had a life together before, that when they're thrown into the situation and then playing out those scenes with everyone else there, it came naturally for it to be awkward.

Ian Harding: Yes.

Lindsay Lohan: Because we hadn't had an idea of what they were like before. I think, actually, we did film the more intimate moments that our characters had together before, that scene where I get upset about my mom. So we understood their connection and how close it was before we shot the awkward moments.

Ian Harding: Also, I think it was on the page, and then if somebody who's a seasoned pro you just say it and it's there. So I don't want to say it was easy, but it was certainly easier with somebody like her.

Lindsay Lohan: Thank you. You too.

Ian Harding: Well, it's true.

Kristin Chenoweth: It is true.

Ian Harding: I was also going to say, having watched you for years growing up and just having an idea of you, to now being in front of you like, "Oh, I feel like I know this person," and then I'm like, “Great, I got it." So maybe that came across.

And Kristin, your character is one that I think a lot of people can probably relate to as the terrifyingly impossible to impress mother of a significant other. I'm curious in playing her where you felt like her motivation came from in the difference of how she treated Avery versus Logan as her children's significant others.

Kristin Chenoweth: I have a feeling that the way I decided to do this, I think my character might be a little insecure around other women. So she's always more comfortable with even her own son Logan, but women, I think she might wish she were a little different age maybe, and wish she could go back in time maybe, just somewhere down deep. That was a little undercurrent of why I was so obsessed with my son and so obsessed with Logan as well.

We can put a little spoiler warning for this question, but that reveal at the end made me let out an audible, "What?" I'm just curious how you guys reacted when you first read that in the script.

Lindsay Lohan: I mean, when I read it, I was like, "This is perfect." It just needed that extra kick.

Kristin Chenoweth: It did.
