For five years, the viewers have had the pleasure of watching new romances blossom and familial bonds strengthen. However, some people believe certain relationships are more wholesome than others. Want some examples? Keep reading to discover what 5 relationships they believe are unhealthy and the 5 they believe aren't.

Toxic: Jamie & Dougal

Although Jamie has made his peace with his uncle, Dougal and Jamie had one of the worst relationships ever. As evidenced in season 1, Dougal wasn't very fond of his nephew as Jamie's existence threatened his claim of becoming ruling Laird. Dougal was also seen to degrade his nephew, using the scars on Jamie's back to fuel his own desires.

By season 2, the relationship didn't improve as Dougal was seen to proposition Claire several times. Ultimately, this relationship ended in disaster as Jamie was forced to kill the war chieftain in self-defense.

Wholesome: Brianna & Lord John

While Brianna and Lord John's arrangement wasn't cemented in the idealist of circumstances, fans couldn't help but notice the chemistry between Skelton and Berry. Despite Lord John only agreeing to the union to buy Brianna and Roger some time, some fans couldn't help but love how protective John was over her.

They also loved that John treated her like an equal, respecting her decisions and ensuring that no harm befell her while she visited Bonnet at Cross Creek. Even after her wedding to Roger, John still proves to be a good and loyal ally for her.

Toxic: Dougal & Claire

Unlike Brianna and Lord John's arrangement, Dougal and Claire's relationship was the complete opposite. It was toxic and manipulative. When Claire met Dougal in season 1, there was an instant mistrust between them. Dougal kept her captive at Castle Leoch and then forced her into an arranged marriage with Jamie.

Then, when Jamie was suspected dead, Dougal dared to proposition Claire. It might have looked like he was being kind - he wasn't. Since Jamie had more claim to the Fraser land, if he was dead then Dougal got it all. Even Claire knew Dougal's motives were all self-interested and power moves. It's why she fought him for so long.

Wholesome: Jamie & Murtagh

Murtagh with Jamie Before Dying

Although Murtagh and Jamie weren't related by blood, Murtagh treated him better than any of the MacKenzies did. From season 1, Murtagh made it clear that his loyalties would forever lie with Jamie. When Jamie's mother died, Murtagh swore an oath to his godson that he would always stand by his side... and he did.

Toxic: Laoghaire & Jamie

There's no doubt that Laoghaire and Jamie's romance is one of the most toxic relationships on the show. In season 1, Jamie and Laoghaire were seen to share a brief flirtation after the Scotsman took her punishment. However, this turned out to be the worst thing he could have done as it wasn't long before she went all Fatal Attraction on him.

First, she tried to use a love potion on him. When that didn't work, she tried to have Claire killed twice so he would be free to be with her. It's definitely a relationship that belongs only in horror films.

Wholesome: Ian & Jenny

Probably a controversial entry but Roger and Brianna's relationship can be seen as toxic. Beginning officially in season 4, Roger and Brianna's romance was like something out of a fairy tale. However, it took a dark turn when Roger revealed his true colors.
