Plugable, a company that creates docks to provide tech connectivity without using built-in computer ports, unveiled a 16-in-1 Thunderbolt dock that can power four 4K displays with just a single USB4/Thunderbolt connection at capable of high data transfer speeds, and Thunderbolt docks take advantage of this potential by adding more connectivity options while using a single port.
Officially known as the Thunderbolt Certified 16-in-1 Quad Display Docking Station, same USB4/Thunderbolt port.
Not All Laptops Can Take Advantage Of Plugable's Dock
The dock packs a total of 16 ports, offering everything from power and data to audio and networking. It's particularly useful for s who frequently connect a laptop to a desktop workstation with multiple displays, peripherals, external storage, and hardline Ethernet connections. Plugable's dock splits the video outputs between HDMI and DisplayPort, including two of each port capable of sending 4K video out to external displays.
Not all laptops can connect to four 4K displays with a single USB4/Thunderbolt port. Windows PCs running Windows 10 or newer can utilize all four display outputs to connect to 4K displays, but Mac s are out of luck. Unlike other docks, Plugable's latest option does not overcome the output limitations of Apple Silicon computers. Mac systems built on Intel, M1 Pro, or M1 Max architectures can power two displays, and M1 or M2 systems are limited to just one external display connection.
Despite potential display limitations, the dock is technically compatible with any device with a USB-C connection. Most of the dock's features are dependent on the USB4/Thunderbolt standard, though, and prospective buyers should make sure their computer is capable of utilizing the dock's features before buying. With a steep price point of $299, only s that can take advantage of all or most of the dock's flexibility should take the leap.
Despite the limitations, the device is certainly proving to be popular. Just hours after the product was announced, pre-orders sold out on Amazon for the 16-in-1 dock. Plugable's Thunderbolt Certified 16-in-1 Quad Display Docking Station will be available from Jan. 17.
