Metagross is the talk of the town in Pokémon GO right now, especially as its pre-evolution Beldum is headlining the August 2024 Community Day Classic event. This dual Psychic/Steel-type Pokémon has been a standout attacker in Raid Battles for years, but you'll need to teach it the best moveset before it can reach its full potential in the mobile game.

Hailing from Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire's Hoenn region, Metagross is a popular pseudo-Legendary with excellent stats and the brilliant Charged Attack Meteor Mash. With the powerful Mega Metagross expected to cause a commotion when it eventually makes its Pokémon GO debut, there's even more reason to evolve a strong Metagross with good IVs and an optimal moveset.

Metagross Best Moveset In Pokémon GO

A Steel-type Sensation

The best PvP moveset to teach Metagross is Bullet Punch as a Fast Attack, with Meteor Mash and Earthquake as Charged Attacks. Together, Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash give Metagross a powerful Steel-type combination that can take out Fairy, Ice, and Rock-type opponents with ease. Even better, both of these attacks come with Same-Type Attack Boost (STAB).

If you have the resources to teach Metagross a second Charged Attack, go with the ever-brilliant Ground-type move Earthquake for added coverage against Electric, Fire, Poison, Rock, and Steel-type Pokémon. It might be tempting to go for Psychic to get another STAB move in its arsenal, but the coverage isn't as good. Only consider this move if you really need a cheaper Charged Attack.

The good news is that if you're interested in using Metagross as a Steel-type attacker in Raid Battles, you can stick with the same moveset recommended above. Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash are able to dish out a devastating amount of damage together, making Metagross an essential Steel-type in any Trainer's team.

Metagross can also be used as a brilliant Psychic-type attacker with the Fast Attack Psychic and the Charged Attack Zen Headbutt, although there are some better options out there including Mewtwo, Lunala, and Hoopa Unbound.

Limited But Powerful

Metagross in the Pokemon anime

Metagross has two potential Fast Attacks and four potential Charged Attacks in Pokémon GO, including the featured move Meteor Mash which can only be learned during special events like Community Days. This is a rather restricted move pool, covering just three types (Steel, Psychic, and Ground), but it's more than enough for it to shine.

Is Metagross Good In Pokémon GO?

The Short Answer: Absolutely

Metagross, Metang, and Beldum in Pokemon GO

With the right moveset and a high enough , Metagross is one of the most versatile creatures in Pokémon GO, serving dual purposes as a top-tier attacker in Raids and an excellent choice for Trainer Battles in the traditional Master League. It will need its featured attack Meteor Mash to unlock its full potential in both of these areas, so it's one of the few cases where it's worth using a rare Elite Charged TM to learn it.

If you only have enough resources for one powered-up Metagross, its primary purpose should be as a Steel-type attacker for Raid Battles. With Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash at its disposal, it's one of the all-time greatest Steel-type attackers in the game, so it should always be on your team when taking on Fairy, Ice, and Rock-type Raid Bosses like Xerneas, Articuno, or Regirock.

One of the reasons Metagross is so good is because it has a huge number of resistances. Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, and Steel-type attacks will all struggle to deal much damage to this steel beast.

As mentioned earlier, Metagross can also be used as a Psychic-type attacker if you have enough resources to evolve and power up a second one, which hopefully you will do after the Beldum Community Day Classic event. In this case, you'll want to go with a moveset consisting of the Fast Attack Zen Headbutt and the Charged Attack Psychic, both of which get STAB.

Finally, if you're a fan of the Pokémon GO Battle League, Metagross can excel in the Master League. Here, it has the potential to defeat plenty of strong opponents including Mewtwo, Dragonite, Xerneas, Zacian, and even the ever-present threat of Dialga. Just watch out for its weakness to Dark, Fire, Ghost, and Ground-type attacks, which can put a real dent in its metal shell.
