Pokémon GO unveiled a new feature called Routes to the augmented reality mobile game, where players can share great walking paths with each other to help encourage everyone to get out and explore their world in new ways. This new experience in the game allows a player to record a path that they walk starting from one PokéStop or Gym and try to share that Route with others in the area. Players following others' Routes will get several rewards by doing so, and may even get to see new areas of their town.
Pokémon GO has hundreds of Pokémon for players to catch and the best way to get them all is by walking. The app was initially designed with the concept of trying to encourage players to get outside more and get some exercise. This AR game helps to promote just that through the real-world maps and abundance of pocket monsters to collect in a player's own city. The new Pokémon GO Routes feature even introduces a brand-new Pokémon to the game, the mythical Zygarde.
How Pokémon GO Routes Works
In order to submit a Route, a player should first select a PokéStop or Gym and then hit record to start mapping out a Route. The app will ask a few questions about the Route and then players can submit it for review, not just any Route will be accepted. After it has been approved, other players in the area will be able to see the Route is available by clicking on the Route tab to see what is close to them and then selecting to follow that Route to get rewards. A Special Research story is also currently available, "From A To Zygarde," that introduces the Zygarde Pokémon to the app.
Some of the bonuses Trainers will get by following Routes include:
- Zygarde Cells for the new Zygarde Pokémon.
- Special Badges.
- Buddy Candy is earned more quickly while following a Route.
- The active Buddy can receive a Heart after a Route is completed.
- Incense will work more effectively while following a Route for the first time.
- XP Bonuses after the first Route of each day, and more Bonuses for daily use.
Pokémon GO Routes May Raise Safety Concerns
One concern that some players may have is whether it's safe to be sharing their walking path with the world. Niantic reviewing routes is clearly in the interest of player safety, but it is important to be aware that if another player clicks on the Route details they will be able to see how many other players have followed that Route, and the Trainer-provided details, including the Pokémon GO Trainer's in-game name. Players will not be able to see who is currently using the Route or what times the Route is typically traveled. Also, if a player follows a Route that was submitted by someone else, and it does not meet Niantic standards, they can report that Route immediately, such as if it traverses an unsafe location.
At the end of following a Route, players will also have the chance to rate the Route using a star rating that other Trainers can then see when deciding if they want to explore a new Route. Overall, this is a chance for players to see new walking paths and explore new locations. This new Routes feature would also come in very handy while on vacation to a new area, to be able to know where are the best places to explore using Pokémon GO as their guide.
