Strategic planning and a bit of luck let a Pokémon GO player set the world record for most experience gained from a single catch. Niantic's alternate reality mobile game, released back in 2016, celebrated its five-year anniversary of release this year. The game has been praised for combining classic Pokémon gameplay with real-world exploration and exercise.

Despite being five years old, Pokémon GO still offers a multitude of frequent events to keep players engaged and interested. Pokémon GO's Season of Discovery seasonal event has returned in 2021 and has brought with it a lot of exciting new content. The title's new season, which began on June 1, saw the return of the three Legendary Regi Pokémon: Regirock, Regice, and Registeel. These tough-as-rocks Pokémon can be encountered in intense five-star raids until June 17, at which time a new raid will begin featuring a mysterious unspecified Pokémon. Pokémon GO's Season of Discovery will also contain Pokémon GO Fest 2021, as the annual celebration will return on July 17.  The music-themed event will commemorate the game's five-year anniversary by adding new shiny Pokémon, raids, and other themed features.

A report from Game Rant reveals that a Pokémon GO player has broken the world record for the highest amount of experience gained from a single catch. Reddit AirbenderSteven captured the Fairy-type Pokémon Swirlix while boosting all of their XP categories by eight, which combined with boosts for a seven-day streak and the first catch of the day. The result was a single capture which earned AirbenderSteven a breathtaking 73,760 XP. The perfect combination of experience boosts suggests that the impressive feat was planned well in advance by a truly knowledgable Trainer.

With the Season of Discovery underway and Pokémon GO Fest 2021 more than a month away, there is plenty for Pokémon GO players to look forward to throughout the month of June. Alongside raids featuring the Legendary Regi Pokémon, and the mysterious new Legendary arriving on June 17, many of the events throughout the month will be Spotlight Hours and Community Days. These short-lived events place focus on one particular Pokémon, which become more readily available and grant bonus rewards upon capture. The next Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour, which will emphasize the Psychic Pokémon Abra, is set to arrive on June 8 at 6 pm.

Pokémon GO's unique gameplay and constant flow of content have helped it maintain a large and loyal fanbase. Five years after release players are still working to perfect their Pokémon training performance, manipulating experience boosts and planning their actions to maximize profits. AirbenderSteven's 73,760 XP catch is very remarkable, setting a world record and solidifying the player's ability to really catch 'em all.
