Pokémon Legends: Z-A will include Mega Evolutions for various Pokémon. This isn’t too much of a surprise, since the game takes place in the Kalos region, where the series first introduced Mega Evolutions. The trailers for the game have so far shown 10 Pokémon who can Mega Evolve.

Though none of Pokémon Legends: Z-A starter Pokémon have Mega Evolutions (as of now), it’s clear that you will have a chance to catch some who can. Z-A takes place in Lumiose City, but the city's new Wild Zones seem populated with Pokémon from all over. I also wouldn’t be too surprised if the game introduces some new Mega Evolutions, or at least includes a few more Pokémon who can Mega Evolve and weren’t in the trailers.

There Are 10 Pokémon Who Can Mega Evolve In Z-A So Far

So far there are 10 Pokémon who can Mega Evolve seen in the trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Although most of them are shown Mega Evolving, we didn’t see a Mega Lopunny or Mega Pidgeot. However, both a Pidgeot and Lopunny’s starting form Buneary were seen in the trailers, so it’s safe to assume their Mega forms will appear. The full list of confirmed Pokémon in Z-A who should be able to Mega Evolve is as follows:

  • Charizard
  • Kangaskhan
  • Gardevoir
  • Lucario
  • Gyarados
  • Lopunny
  • Pidgeot
  • Ampharos
  • Absol
  • Altaria

It will be interesting to see if Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduces any new Mega Evolutions for existing Pokémon. As of now, the games have tried to be a bit more reserved with creating Mega Evolution forms. There are 48 possible Mega Evolutions, which is only around five percent of all Pokémon. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Z-A’s three starting Pokémon were chosen because they will be getting Mega Evolutions.

How Mega Evolution Works In Z-A

Players Mega Evolve Pokémon During Battles

Mega Evolving a Pokémon requires you to have a specific Mega Stone for that Pokémon. These are items with the name of the Pokémon and the prefix -ite, for example, Charizardite or Blastoisinite. Mega Evolutions are a temporary state, unlike typical Pokémon evolution, and there is an option during battles to trigger it. It will be interesting to see how Mega Evolutions play in Z-A's new battle system.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A 2nd Trailer

Pokémon Legends: Z-A, an ambitious new entry to the Pokémon game series, has been slated for release on Nintendo Switch systems in autumn 2025!

Mega Evolution will give your Pokémon a temporary stat buff while it lasts. A Pokémon will stay Mega Evolved until it faints or until the battle is over. Once you’re done, it will go back to its original state, and you will need to Mega Evolve it again during a battle. As of now, it isn’t clear how you will obtain Mega Stones in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but they will likely be available later on in the game so as not to make you too powerful too quickly.
