Summary
- Pokémon Legends: Z-A is returning to the Kalos region, and there are a number of mysteries leftover from X and Y that could finally get answers.
- Unresolved mysteries from Kalos in X and Y include the Strange Souvenir, Lumiose City Ghost Girl, and the mysterious TVM Train Station message.
- Strange occurrences such as the special Eevee, Sycamore's message from the past, and the Hiker/Con Artist contribute to the enigmatic nature of Kalos.
With the news that Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be revisiting Generation 6's Kalos region, it could be time to revisit some mysteries left unsolved from the last time the region was used. Pokémon X and Y introduced players to the region on the 3DS back in 2013, being the first title to replace the pixel art sprites with 3D models. At the time, it was a big step-up in the franchise from a graphical standpoint, adding new mechanics and customization.
The Kalos region is based on , an inspiration most obvious in Lumiose City, since it's Prism Tower, which doubles as the city's gym, resembles the Eiffel Tower in Paris. With the graphical capabilities of the 3DS, this city was one of Pokémon's biggest, and the size allowed Game Freak to fill it to the brim with hidden secrets and Easter Eggs that are yet to be solved to this day.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Means One Big Change Might Be Coming To The TCG
Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s recent announcement may also be foreshadowing that a subsequent major change will be coming to the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
10 The Backpacker From An Unknown Region
What Does His Souvenir Do?
Pokémon X and Y featured several hotels throughout the region which players could stay at. While exploring these hotels, there were a few reoccurring NPCs players could meet that were also journeying across the area. One was a backpacker that would spawn randomly in different hotels. When spoken to on four different days, he will give the player an item called the Strange Souvenir.
At the time, the backpacker would mention that he was from a region that the games had yet to visit. In hindsight, it's now easy to see that he was from the Alola region, which would be visited in the next Pokémon titles, but that doesn't explain the item he gives the player. The Strange Souvenir could just be an item for decoration, but there could be more to it, given how mysterious the backpacker is, and could see use in Legends Z-A.
9 Lumiose City Ghost Girl
An Urban Legend With More To It
The Ghost Girl of Lumiose City has become somewhat of an urban legend in the Pokémon fanbase, and it is perhaps the most famous mystery to come from the X and Y games. Players could only encounter the Ghost Girl once in an abandoned office building, where she says, "No, you're not the one..." before vanishing. This occurs after riding an elevator and, once the lights flicker, the Ghost Girl appears.
She doesn't move like other NPCs, floating about rather than walking. Perhaps Legends Z-A could explain who this girl is and who "the one" could be. Even after over ten years, there has been no explanation regarding the Ghost Girl, even though she has a unique character model and has garnered a lot of attention. Her inclusion also seems quite dark for a Pokémon title, leaving many to believe there is more of a story to tell here.
8 The Maid & Her Eevee
What Makes This Eevee So Special?
As is the case with a few NPCs, a maid can be met on the upper floor of a Kalos hotel. This hotel will be random, and if the maid is talked to several times, she will offer the player "a special Eevee that she caught in Mr. Backlot's Trophy Garden in Sinnoh." She will trade it for any Pokémon, which is odd given that the maid truly believes this Eevee to be unique.

How To Unlock Every Eeveelution In Pokémon Sleep
Eevee is perhaps one of the most sought-after Pokémon in Pokémon Sleep due to its 8 different valuable Eeveelutions, all of which evolve differently.
Strangely enough, there isn't a lot that's special about this Eevee. It holds a Rare Candy, which is always useful, but it doesn't have any particularly amazing stats, nor is it unique in appearance. So, why is it special, and why does the maid want to trade a Pokémon that was caught all the way in the Sinnoh region? It is a peculiar deal, to say the least, and it doesn't explain why a maid has it. Did she steal it from Mr Backlot? Did she work for him before? Hopefully Legends Z-A can elaborate.
7 TVM Train Station Hidden Message
It's A Bit Ominous For A Pokémon Game
With the grandiose and dense nature of Luminose City, there is plenty of space for Easter Eggs. There have been a multitude of references to other titles, yet the hidden message in the TVM Train Station seems too vague to be a reference to anything in particular. In fact, the wording of the message itself made it quite ominous, reading, "I'm going to go for help. Wait in the usual place."
Several questions arise from this message. Who wrote it and is going for help? Why do they need this help? Who are they asking to stay in the usual place, and what is the usual place? None of these are answered in the game, with some believing that the famous Ghost Girl is the person behind this message. Pokémon Legends Z-A could reveal the truth behind these mysteries and maybe even center a quest around it.
6 Professor Sycamore Message To The Future
A Time-Travelling Professor
Each Pokémon title has its own professor to guide the player, and the Kalos region has the energetic Professor Sycamore. He's young as Pokémon professors go and is actually willing to battle the player in Couriway Town. As a reward for beating him, he will state that he left something for the player in the town, but does not elaborate on what it is nor where it could be.
All that players could find was a message on a bench at the train station. There's an inscription on one of these benches which seems to be a message from Sycamore directed to his future self. It isn't clear whether this is what the Professor left for the player, but with time travel already being a story point in Legends: Arceus, this could imply that Sycamore is the one to bring it back to Z-A.
Sycamore was a student of Professor Rowan (the Sinnoh region's professor) for two years before moving to Kalos.
5 Couriway Town Trains
Where Do They Go?
Despite public transport being a mechanic that players can take advantage of in the Kalos region, the Couriway Town Train Station seems oddly useless. The trains don't seem to go anywhere, and the player can't use them, like the TVM from Lumiose City to Kiloude City. There isn't any hint in the game like a train map, timetable, or anything, making it become quite a mystery.
Some have theorized that it goes to Anville Town. Others think it goes to a completely different region, but in X and Y it might as well go nowhere. In Z-A, perhaps the train station could finally find use in taking the player from location to location. It is rumored that the latest Legends title will take place in the future, and the better technology could lead to more immersive and dynamic fast travel systems.

10 Things Pokémon Legends: Z-A Should Take From Arceus
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the second in the Legends series of Pokémon games, and there are many features it should take from Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
4 Hiker Con Artist
What Does He Do With That Gyarados?
Another NPC who randomly appears in hotels throughout the Kalos region is the Hiker, who is also nicknamed the Con Artist. The name is apt, as he will offer the player a deal of a lifetime after being talked to for several days. He will trade a "super special" Magikarp for a Gyarados, as part of his con. This doesn't sound like a great deal, especially since the Magikarp being traded has nothing special about it.
In all likelihood, this Hiker is a reference to Gen 1's Magikarp Salesman aboard the S.S. Anne. The pretty useless fish Pokémon has been a longstanding joke in the series, and this call back does continue the bit, but there are a few questions left unanswered here. What does the Hiker do with this Gyarados? It isn't as though he is seen again battling his way through the region with his new Pokémon.
Magikarps are quite useless outside their evolution into Gyarados, but have found a fan base thanks to this uselessness. In fact, a common joke in the fan base is that Magikarp can use one of Gyarados' signature moves: Hyper Beam.
3 MissingNo. Reference
Will It Become An Actual Pokémon?
MissingNo. is a famous glitch from the first generation of Pokémon, named because of the ten-character limit in western Generation 1 games. It could randomly appear as a wild Pokémon encounter in Red and Blue and would be a Normal/Bird-type. Due to its fame, it appeared as an Easter Egg in Lumiose City, specifically in a doorway of a random building once a player angled the camera the right way.
Although just a Pokémon Easter Egg, if the glitch is revisited, it could become a real Pokémon in Z-A. With the futuristic nature of the title, it could be easily justified as a glitch given form, and it could be a fun nod to explain why it was randomly in a doorway. With how old the glitch is, it is about time it became an official Pokémon.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Needs To Fix Scarlet & Violet’s Biggest Battle Mistake
While Scarlet & Violet are great games, Pokémon Legends: Z-A needs to improve upon one of the biggest features of the series, again.
2 Two Abandoned Skiddo
Hachikō Times Two
Players can interact with an older woman outside one of Lumiose City's many cafés. She will tell the players about a pair of Skiddos that have been abandoned by their trainer outside the train station. Despite the Kalos region's historically French setting, this seems to be a reference to the legendary Japanese story of Hachikō, a dog that was left by its master, also beside a train station.
Hachikō is so famous in Japan that the dog earned a statue, and this story could just be Pokémon's homage to this. Still, the Skiddos can actually be seen in the world, in front of the train station as described, but can't be interacted with nor added to a trainer's roster. Perhaps Z-A could give some context to this, showing the fate of the trainer who abandoned these Skiddos or even letting the player find them a new home.
Hachikō was an akita inu, who waited nine years for his deceased owner to return. The loyal dog died in 1935 and has become a famous story ever since.
1 Route 14 Graves
Who Are The Tombstones For?
On Route 14, outside a location creatively called the Scary House, sits half a dozen graves. These graves have been placed in an orderly fashion so that their tombstones are in two rows of three, which is unlike the other tombs on Route 14. A maid on the first floor of an office building will mention Master Miles and the Riches family from Black and White, which has led to a theory that these graves are for this family.
Six out of seven of the Riches family are trainers that can be battled, and there are six graves. The maid states that the family moved after the events of Black and White 2, while the only non-trainer in the family, the father, stayed. These graves could mean that the move didn't go well. Then again, there could be a connection to these graves and the famed Ghost Girl urban legend. There likely won't be any definitive answers until Pokémon Legends Z-A is released.
