Pokémon TCG Pocket has teased several brand-new cards as part of its first post-launch events. Today, the Japanese for the brand new mobile game revealed a new Lapras ex promotional card as well as a new Meowth card with a tease that a series of in-app events would launch soon. The Lapras ex card has a Bubble Beam attack that deals 80 damage and heals 20 damage from Lapras, while Meowth comes with a simple Pay Day attack that deals 30 damage. No timing was given for either card's release.
Interestingly, the Meowth card seems to tie into a Wonder Pick event of some kind. The promotional art shows a Chansey Wonder Pick with the Meowth promotional card available as one of the options. Currently, the Wonder Pick function allows players to pull one card from a pack previously opened by another player, so this would be a new type of functionality with the app.
What Promo Cards Are Coming To Pokémon TCG Pocket?
24 Promo Cards Confirmed For Pokémon TCG Pocket So Far
Datamines of Pokémon TCG Pocket previously revealed 24 promotional cards as part of the initial game release. Several of these cards are available now either through the card shop or via the . The will likely be a way to get exclusive alternative art cards, while other cards will be made available through in-game events or by completing missions of some kind. Players can try out the for free and get an exclusive Pikachu alternative art card now. The costs $9.99 per month.
Other datamines suggest that Pokémon TCG Pocket will also release a mini-set sometime in December to bridge the gap between set releases. While full-set releases similar in size to Genetic Apex are expected to come out once a quarter, these mini-sets should help keep players engaged and active as they start to fill out their collections. Currently, it's unknown how many cards will appear in each mini-set.
Screen Rant's Take: Fun Events Are Key To Pokémon TCG Pocket's Success
Good Events Will Make Or Break Pokémon TCG Pocket
The big question here is how often Pokémon TCG Pocket will host events and how critical each card will be to building a winning deck. Lapras ex seems like a strong card, but it doesn't appear so overwhelmingly powerful that it would impact the overall game. Likewise, Meowth seems like a card purely made for collection purposes, although that could change if a strong Persian card is released in the future. Like any service game, the balance between grinding and actually enjoying the event gameplay will be key here. Given Pokémon TCG Pocket's current limited features, these events could make all the difference to the game's long-term prospects.
