Warning: Potential SPOILERS for Action Comics #1051After all these decades, Superman Family's famous S-shield symbol. Artist Marguerite Sauvage recently posted new character designs on social media, including sleek new looks for Power Girl and the former Teen Titan, Omen. Both designs will be featured in an Action Comics story.

In posts to both Twitter and Instagram, Marguerite Sauvage—the artist for Power Girl's Action Comics story—revealed her brand-new character and costume designs for both Power Girl and Omen. Omen retains her usual green and black color scheme, but switches from her robe to a bodysuit with a jacket. Power Girl's new suit has some extremely notable changes: in addition to her new white pants, Karen Starr now also sports a jacket. Like many of the new Super-Family designs, the jacket is bright red with a large gold S-shield on the back, as well as smaller shields on her shoulders.

Power Girl's New Costume Is the Best of Her Old Design and DC's New Era

This costume reveal comes at the heels of a swath of Superman Family costume changes. A new era is coming for Superman and his allies starting in Action Comics #1051 by a stacked creative team, including Dan Jurgens, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Leah Williams, Marguerite Sauvage, Rafa Sandoval, Lee Weeks, Elizabeth Breitweiser, and Matt Herms. The new format for DC's flagship title will include one main story about the entire Superman Family and two bonus stories about Jon Kent's childhood and, of course, Power Girl's current status quo. The issue marks the beginning of DC's brand-new era, dubbed "Dawn of DC."

Power Girl's new costume is remarkable for a number of reasons. Not only is it a typically stylish Sauvage design, it also plays on Power Girl's history by including a number of elements from her previous (and iconic) design. Most notably, despite the pants, Power Girl is keeping the "window" in her suit's chest where a hero's symbol would typically go. There has been a lot of debate about the appropriateness of this design choice over the years, but it suits Karen's character: a Kryptonian, yes, but not this Earth's Supergirl. Power Girl is often an outsider, and the hole in her costume preserves that part of her character.

That said, Power Girl fans will be overjoyed to see her finally sporting the iconic Superman symbol on the back of her new jacket. Karen Starr will always be her own woman and hero, but that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve to be included among the Superman Family's ranks. The entire Family's new jackets create a sense of togetherness that has been sorely lacking in recent years, and Power Girl's newly redesigned suit proves that she is just as much of a "Super" as any of Superman's other Kryptonian allies.
