Summary
- Lord Drakkon's story in the Power Rangers comics sets up the perfect opportunity for a new live-action series.
- A potential reboot of Power Rangers could take place in a brand-new continuity and explore the concept of alternate timelines.
- The franchise has the potential to grow beyond the classic TV shows by incorporating the multiverse concept and telling new, original stories.
The Power Rangers reboot show can exist outside of the established continuity from the TV shows or the comics, yet there is one Lord Drakkon story that sets up the perfect new live-action series. First appearing in BOOM! Studios’ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #9, Lord Drakkon was at the center of some of the most popular Power Rangers sagas of recent years. While Drakkon has yet to debut in live-action, Power Rangers’ multiverse stories mean the character could easily be incorporated into the TV shows, particularly in a reboot.
A young adult, scripted Power Rangers TV show has been in the works for a couple of years, and it could be the saga’s next big project following Super Sentai adaptations, as seen in Cosmic Fury, which would allow this new series to tell an all-original story. If so, this new Power Rangers show has the opportunity to dive into the most exciting concepts from the comics, starting with Drakkon and the multiverse.

Power Rangers In Order: How To Watch Every Series Chronologically & By Release Date
From Mighty Morphin to Cosmic Fury, here is how to watch every Power Rangers TV show in order, both chronologically and by release date.
Shattered Grid’s Lord Drakkon Unveiled The Power Rangers Multiverse
BOOM! Studios’ Shattered Grid (2018), a massive comic book event based on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Go, Go, Power Rangers books, explored the franchise’s multiverse in a way that the TV shows had never done. The multiverse has existed in Power Rangers since R.P.M., which, despite being canon, took place in an alternate timeline from the main Power Rangers chronology. Another example is Dino Charge, which is set in a different universe from most of the Power Rangers TV shows. Still, apart from a couple of crossover episodes, Power Rangers had yet to explore the idea of a multiverse.
BOOM!’s Power Rangers comics, which were initially perceived as a re-imagination of the TV shows that would follow Mighty Morphin’s canon but in a modern setting, used the multiverse device to give the comics more freedom. Lord Drakkon, an evil version of Tommy Oliver from an alternate universe in which the Green Ranger never ed the Power Rangers, finds a way to travel to other universes and uses that technology to kill and steal the powers of dozens of Rangers across the multiverse. While Lord Drakkon is eventually defeated, Shattered Grid ends with a broken Power Rangers multiverse being reworked into a new collection of timelines.
Power Rangers’ New Show Will Likely Take Place In A Brand-New Continuity
No reboot or remake needs an in-universe explanation for it. That said, considering that both the Power Rangers TV shows and the highly popular Power Rangers comics have established the concept of a multiverse, it would be interesting for the franchise to incorporate the idea of alternate timelines whenever the new series comes to be. More specifically, the Power Rangers reboot, which will most likely take place in its own continuity and won’t tie directly into the previous seasons, will benefit from an in-universe, lore-heavy explanation as to why it exists outside of the classic TV shows. This would allow Power Rangers to start fresh without disregarding what came before.
The idea of a Power Rangers reboot is naturally divisive, and very little is unknown about this project or any other Power Rangers stories after Cosmic Fury. Still, considering that Power Rangers Cosmic Fury perfectly wrapped up the story that began 30 years ago with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, there is no better time to reinvent the franchise. The Power Rangers reboot does not necessarily need to reference the old shows or the comics all the time, but addressing the multiverse aspect of the franchise while introducing a new story would be a cool trick. This would even allow Power Rangers to finally bring Lord Drakkon into live-action.
Power Rangers’ Multiverse Stories Means It Can Grow Beyond The Classic TV Shows
Power Rangers has expanded beyond the TV show’s continuity before, namely with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie, the 2017 Power Rangers reboot, and the BOOM! Studios comics. However, there is still a lot of untapped potential when it comes to Power Rangers stories that are not Super Sentai adaptations. All of Power Rangers’ 30 seasons have followed a very strict formula, and the next series needs to do something new. Power Rangers does not have to ignore the impressive legacy that it has built since 1993, but a TV reboot could be the breath of fresh air the saga needs.
Fortunately, the multiverse concept can allow the franchise to do both – keep everything that has been done so far intact and start a new Power Rangers story. A direct adaptation of the Power Rangers comics, especially Lord Drakkon’s story and Shattered Grid, would be incredibly exciting. That said, as much as the comics should inspire whatever Power Rangers is doing next, new TV shows or movies don’t have to be a retelling of those famous stories. There is still a lot to be learned about Power Rangers’ future, but the franchise has multiple opportunities to grow beyond the classic series’ legacy.
