There really isn’t anything else out there to replace it with, family show-wise. Good family sci-fi fun has given away to gritty, sexualized adult sci-fi. Understandable since that age group pays the bills (and are more cynical about world), but has come with a price: nothing for family fun. Doctor Who was one of those last bastions (cultural differences between fans notwithstanding). We don’t need more Black Mirrors or Expanses or adult themed Battlestar Galacticas. We need more family adventures. Otherwise, let’s just concede defeat and deport our children to the Gods of Youtube and social media. I grant we’ve already lost them and society doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to get them back…or save future generations. No Saturday morning shows or Disney Afternoons. Just Instagram and Twitter memes. The age of the iPad teen is here to stay for generations to come, as l am not seeing anything on the network landscape to counter it (and, yes I know Doctor WHO is on a Disney+ subscription platform…that, in and of itself is also a problem: too many shows consolidated to pay platforms that a lot of families can’t afford on a monthly basis).
