The article didn't say it did poorly in Japan, it said the western release has few people connecting with it. As for having free reign all sources say they did, whether or not the original creator/author approved of what they did is irrelevent to that. They probably thought the dub team would be respectful but you give a team in america free reign to dub something they're gonna have fun with it. A LOT of fun.
