Background is in how the Reavers are breaking through just as the Alliance cabal is trying to stop Mel & his crew from broadcasting the secrets of the Miranda human expirament gone awry. The Reavers bring the imagery something like the Norse-Viking bezerkers of enthralled mad warriors on drugs. Mal’s tactical gambit of rigging Serenity to look like a Reaver raider craft swats the hornet’s nest bringing the entire Reaver horde down on the Alliance armada into a fog of war. The gambit of chaos works allowing Serenity to dart around the gunship screen but not without taking damage targetted & pursued with a fatal crash landing into the complex bay. Further background has the affable Kaylee character developed in the movie but the whole series prelude has Kaylee's arc.
