See AllThe Legend Of Zelda Needs To Nerf Link, Even If It Comes At A Cost
Regarding abilities vs. shrines, a lot of those that found themselves "cheating" their way through shrines did so simply because there was little to no substance to any of them. It was just 100+ variations of "put the ball in the cup". None of it had anything to do with the overall story.
This is something that BoTW and, to a slightly lesser extent, ToTK failed at; the game gave you freedom the moment you started it, but aside from beating Ganon, nothing you do really matters, because there aren't any proper dungeons. Take OoT or ALTTP; both had amazing dungeons that were not only a part of the environment, but also REQUIRED you to solve them before moving on (yes I know that's a linear game, and most of the time the item you got from the dungeon was barely used after that). When you beat them, it really did feel like you accomplished something, because the environment changed/healed when ithe dungeon was completed, as opposed to the 20th time you put the ball in the cup in a shrine.
If you want Link to get back to basics, I fully that. But you need to understand why most people skipped or used the cheats to go through the shrines; it's because nobody really cared about them. There was very little gratification in solving them. Personally, I looked at them as a repetitive annoyance to get through as quickly as possible.
Take the abilities away, by all means. But take the shrines with them, please.
