I do believe the only way this theory works is if the radiation weakened his healing factor before he acquires the adamantium.
Because he gets the adamantium some time in the early 80s by my reckoning of wolverine origins. If the wolverines key to his death in Logan then I suggest it was the sapping him of his healing power to create the silver samurai that lead to his death. While his body was not self healing this would have been a perfect opportunity for the adamantium leaching to occur.
