Boromir, Merry, and Pippin are also portrayed poorly. In the books he doesn't want the Ring until they reach Lothlorien. All the lines in the movie of him asking for the Ring or saying it should be used are from when he tries to forcefully take the ring. Merry and Pippin are turned into comic relief, however in the books they do a lot to help destroy the ring.
