See All10 Great Martial Arts Movies That You Probably Didn't Know Became Franchises
Drunken master II was released in America as Legend of the Drunken Master due Drunken Master III being released here on video as Drunken Master II. The company that released Legend of the Drunken Master also released the original Drunken Master a few months later with a new dub track, so I doubt anyone was confused.
Drunken Master was originally meant to be a sequel to Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, same cast playing similar characters. One it was decided Chan would play Wong Fei Hung and Simon Yuen would play Beggar So, it became it's own film. But was released in countries unfamiliar with either folk hero as an Eagle's Shadow sequel, including the United States. Chan was under contract to Lo Wei Studios, and had been lent to Seasonal Films for both films. As such, he was unable to team up with Simon Yuen again. Simon would go on to make several movies where he played Beggar So for different Hong Kong studios, each which was released as sequels to Drunken Master. Golden Harvest planned a legitimate sequel when they signed Simon Yuen, Jacky Chan and director Yuen Woo Ping to their studio. But Lo Wei claimed Chan was still under contract with their studio. So instead they shot Magnificent Butcher with Sammo Hung as the title character, and Simon Yuen as his teacher Beggar So. Simon died of a heart attack mid production and was replaced with a different actor. Drunken Master II was shot more than a decade later. Originally to be directed by Lau Kar Leung, he would be fired by Chan midway through the film, and out of spite began directing his own Drunken Master II, which depending if it was released in countries where Chans sequel was released first, would either be titled Drunken Master II or Drunken Master III.
Chan was playing a comedic version of Wong Fei Hung, a folk hero who has appeared in hundreds of martial arts films, including the Once Upon a Time in China series. There have also been several Beggar So movies made after Simon Yuen's death.
