I Don't Care If Modern Star Trek Breaks Established Canon
I agree with most of what you say. I love making canon connections between different series. It's fun and it feels very Trek. Our fellow Trekkies are thinkers and like using our brains.
One thing I appreciate about Trek is it's way of referencing current sociological issues. I personally felt that JL's mother having a mental illness was a brilliant way of bringing this issue up. We are way more advanced with recognizing and accepting it now. During TNG it was still being swept under the carpet. JL and Robert would be too stuffy with each other to discuss it back then!
