Notoriously right-wing, it's no surprise that John Wayne would respond negatively to any movie that didn't romanticize the "old west" or portray US history in a positive light. Don't get me wrong; I love John Wayne movies. Well, most anyway. "The Green Berets" was a notable stinker, for example. But it's hard to beat "The Searchers", "True Grit", "The Shootist," or even "Stagecoach."
