A few things have occured to me throughout the series, the virus may help humans be more resilient to other diseases and heal quicker, also it may subdue fertility, you don't see many pregnancies or births even with the lack of post apocalypse contraception, also women don't seem to run out of period products so maybe it's stopped periods!
