Summary

  • Xbox may be bringing its iconic franchise Halo to PlayStation 5 in the near future.
  • Reports suggest that Microsoft is considering porting Halo to PS5, a massive move as the series is often considered Microsoft's crown jewel.
  • This potential move could upset fans who see it as a surrender to Sony, but it may also offer an entirely new audience the opportunity to play the game.

The next major Xbox game to make the leap to Halo. In the last few months, Xbox has begun pivoting its release model by launching some of the console's popular exclusive games on other devices, a move that's managed to frustrate long-time players demanding quality first-party experiences. The first bundle of Xbox exclusives to cross the console divide and end up on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch included Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, and Pentiment, but they may soon be ed by Master Chief.

According to The Verge's Tom Warren (via GamesRadar+), Microsoft may be considering bringing the Halo franchise to PlayStation 5 in the near future following Sea of Thieves' success on the competing console. While this report should be taken with a grain of salt until Xbox makes an official announcement, it's not hard to imagine the company adding something like The Master Chief Collection to Sony's hardware, offering an entirely new audience an opportunity to play the game. There's certainly precedent for a port as Microsoft appears to be prioritizing software sales over hardware at the time of writing.

Could More Xbox Games Come To PS5?

It Seems More And More LikelyArbiter and Master Chief in the Halo games

The most recent reports of Microsoft looking to bring Halo to PlayStation 5 Sea of Thieves. However, both of those titles are relatively small in comparison to Halo.

Porting Halo over to PlayStation would be a massive move as the series is often considered to be Microsoft's crown jewel. Master Chief's adventures are synonymous with the Xbox brand and the company has leveraged the iconography of the franchise to sell hardware in the past. Sony has previously tried to compete by creating exclusive first-person shooters of its own like Resistance and Killzone but neither one came close to toppling Halo.

Halo dropping on PlayStation 5 would be a signifcant shift for Microsoft, one that will no doubt anger fans who would view it as a "surrender" to Sony. Whether or not the latest reports are true remains to be seen but with Xbox hosting its major annual showcase on June 9, players won't need to speculate for long. Master Chief's fanbase may be on the verge of a massive expansion.
