Psych and Psych has eight seasons and three sequel movies. The police procedural drama sees Shawn Spencer, a crime consultant with a unique set of skills, assist detectives solve cases.

Psych puts a unique spin on the police procedural genre with its fun characters and great comedic timing. As one of the most beloved detective shows on network television, it's not surprising that there is still a possibility that Psych 4 might happen. Although Psych is in a class of its own, there's another show that has almost the same characteristics that make James Roday’s detective series stand out.

Monk premiered in 2002, with Psych releasing four years later. In a sense, Monk paved the way for Psych because it showed that audiences were interested in police procedural dramas that have a unique twist. Apart from both detective shows being unique, Monk and Psych have other things in common. For instance, Adrian Monk and Shawn Spencer have quirky personalities that contribute to the humor in their shows. Additionally, Monk and Shawn use their special abilities to help the detectives in the police forces they consult on to solve crimes.

Despite Monk and Psych using the same formula that police procedural dramas are known for, the two detective shows are wildly entertaining. From the time both shows premiered, Psych and Monk managed to be consistently good until their season finales. The two TV shows are cleverly written and include witty dialogue that makes them engaging. While Monk and Psych’s focus can sometimes be a little dark depending on the crime being solved, the two shows have the ability to perfectly add humor to their storylines.

Monk & Psych Are So Similar, Everyone Expected A Crossover To Happen

There Is A Monk Reference In Psych

Given how similar Monk and Psych are and the promos the two shows did together, audiences expected that there would be a crossover. The crossover didn't happen, but there was a Monk reference in the series finale of Psych. During the final minutes of Psych’s series finale, Shawn and Gus, who had moved to San Francisco, were solving a crime, and they wondered if they could get their consulting jobs back with Chief Vick.

Steve Frank, Psych’s showrunner, confirmed that it was indeed Monk Chief Vick was referring to.

However, the chief said that he had already found a consultant, and that he was currently in the kitchen “alphabetizing the pantry.” Given that Monk takes place in San Francisco and Chief Vick’s words aptly describe the quirky character, the obvious conclusion was that the chief was referring to Monk. Steve Frank, Psych’s showrunner, confirmed that it was indeed Monk Chief Vick was referring to (via E! Online).
