Swift Playgrounds 4 enables s to create, develop, and publish iOS apps directly on an the company's WWDC keynote earlier this year, Apple announced that the feature was coming. Now that it is here, it marks the first time developers have been able to create iOS apps without the need for Xcode on a Mac.
Swift Playgrounds is an app for iPad that lets those new to programming learn the basic building blocks and fundamentals. Since its inception on iPad, s were able to create and build apps on the iPad. However, publishing an app had always required the project to be moved to a Mac first.

A Step In The Right Direction
This is great news for those who've been using Swift Playgrounds on the iPad considering they no longer need to move their Swift Playground projects back to a Mac in order to publish them on the App Store. Moving a project back to a Mac isn't always ideal, and s shouldn't be expected to carry both devices just to publish apps. Speaking of which, this will also make it possible for those without a Mac to publish apps to the App Store.
The change marks a major step forward for the iPad. While Apple has always touted the iPad's hardware capabilities, it's been lacking in the software department for a number of years now. The creation of iPadOS with iPadOS 13 brought some much-needed changes to the iPad, but Apple's tablet software still has some work to do if it going to really take full advantage of the hardware, especially when it comes to the iPad Pro and its M1 chip with up to 16 GB of RAM and 2TB of storage.
