Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are facing off with a cast of eldritch horrors. A major argument leaves the Maximoff twins separated before an attack by the Wizard, but Pietro won't be facing everything on his own. After years of minimal interaction, he's finally reunited with his speedster nephew, Tommy Shepherd, as the two race to stop the Wizard.
The Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #3 - by Steve Orlando, Lorenzo Tammetta, Frank William, and Ariana Maher - promises a continuation of Wanda and Pietro's conflict with the Wizard and his Frightful Four. After sending Pietro floating into space with an anti-gravity pellet and attacking the Scarlet Witch in her shop, the Wizard has a lot to answer for. But it doesn't seem as if handling him will be easy.
Fortunately, they have backup, as Russell Dauterman's vivid cover shows Tommy Shepherd aka Speed running full speed alongside his uncle. The two speedsters haven't had many opportunities to fight alongside each other, and the Wizard has reunited an intimidating, fast-talking duo.
Quicksilver and Speed Will Take the Wizard By Storm
Quicksilver is undoubtedly one of the fastest heroes in the Marvel Universe and has an unmistakable personality, yet it's impossible to find someone more like him than his nephew, Speed. The two are strikingly similar in appearance and attitude, though Tommy is often far more easy-going than his abrasive uncle, and their power sets are comparable. Tommy's top speed doesn't quite match Pietro's, but he has had less time to stretch his legs and markedly fewer opportunities to test himself against other speedsters. Reuniting the two could finally give Tommy a chance to shine and prove his capability to the family.
Moreover, both Pietro and Tommy think at the same lightning-fast pace. Their ability to plan and communicate without slowing each other down could turn them into a fearsome pair, especially when they're both motivated to save the Scarlet Witch. It mirrors their first meeting in the 2010-12 miniseries Avengers: The Children's Crusade by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, when Quicksilver and Speed search for Wanda alongside Magneto and the Young Avengers. Tommy takes that opportunity to show that he can keep up with his uncle, and between their quick wit and fast feet, no one is better equipped (or more driven) to deal with the Wizard.
Pietro and Tommy Can Learn From Each Other
Pietro's sharp tongue rarely wins him any favors, but Tommy's many similarities make him better suited to tolerating his caustic personality than most. The young speedster could doubtlessly use a mentor in his life, too, as he hasn't had the same upward trajectory as his brother Wiccan. Fighting beside family is a chance for Speed to be a hero again, and the reunion could help Pietro, too, as they prepare to deal with the Wizard. Marvel is finally bringing Quicksilver and Speed back together - just in time to handle a powerful magical enemy.
Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #3 is available on April 24 from Marvel Comics.
