Summary

  • Quicksilver's MCU death saved Scarlet Witch from becoming a far more powerful villain than she wound up being on-screen, as it prevented her from tapping into dark abilities that would have changed the trajectory of Marvel's entire Multiverse.
  • Scarlet Witch's connection to the multiverse as an Ultimate Nexus – amplified when in the presence of her twin brother Pietro – would have been too dangerous for the MCU version of the character to wield.
  • Quicksilver's sacrifice in Age of Ultron was necessary to prevent a more nightmarish scenario than viewers witnessed in Doctor Stranger and the Multiverse of Madness.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Scarlet Witch #2!MCU, but it was absolutely necessary to protect the multiverse. While at the time, it was considered a disappointing way to establish his character on screen, a new reveal regarding the twins' connection shows that his death was for the best.

Scarlet Witch #2 – by Steve Orlando and Jacopo Camagni – brings Scarlet Witch face-to-face with the Queen of Nevers in the Land of the Dead, who explains that she harnesses power through nexus beings throughout the multiverse, including Wanda. However, unlike most nexi, Scarlet Witch is special because she's a twin. The two share a connection which ultimately sets her up to become the Ultimate Nexus the longer she stays with Quicksilver.

This title means that Scarlet Witch is capable of developing a power that makes her "able to touch all realities." However, given her path in the MCU, this means her brother's death was the right call.

After his introduction in Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans of the speedster and his mystical sister, Scarlet Witch, were understandably excited to see the iconic duo's future in the MCU. However, those dreams were cut short when Quicksilver was abruptly killed off at the end of the film.

The movie version of Scarlet Witch would have been able to use her brother as a battery to power her ability as the Ultimate Nexus, using her power to tear the MCU – and perhaps even the rest of the Marvel Multiverse – to shreds.

Had Quicksilver survived his sacrifice in Age of Ultron, triggering her villain arc.

If MCU Quicksilver had lived, Wanda would have no need for America Chavez in Multiverse of Madness. Thus, Doctor Strange would have no way of combating Wanda as she reached through the Multiverse to take her children for herself, while also causing chaos in her wake to protect them. The movie version of Scarlet Witch would have been able to use her brother as a battery to power her ability as the Ultimate Nexus, using her power to tear the MCU – and perhaps even the rest of the Marvel Multiverse – to shreds.

Quicksilver's Death Prevented A Worse Fall For Wanda

Scarlet Witch possessed by Mor-I-Dun at the end of Scarlet Witch #2.

Despite how disappointing his death was for many fans, Quicksilver exiting the MCU in Age of Ultron was ultimately for the best.

What's interesting about this new secret to Scarlet Witch's connection to the multiverse is how the responsibility behind the Ultimate Nexus isn't exactly safe in any variant's hands. Scarlet Witch has had constant shifts to the dark side throughout her. One of her most notorious roles was in House of M when she wiped out various heroes with the now iconic phrase "No More Mutants." Plus, with Scarlet Witch #2 ending with her being possessed by the Lovecraftian villain Mor-I-Dun, she's not completely disconnected from the dark side of herself.

In other words, it is perhaps dangerous for Wanda to be the Ultimate Nexus in any reality. Overall, despite how disappointing his death was for many fans, Quicksilver exiting the MCU in Age of Ultron was ultimately for the best. Scarlet Witch's powers as the Ultimate Nexus would have made Multiverse of Madness a total nightmare scenario if he survived Age of Ultron. Of course, this doesn't mean that the entire Marvel Universe is safe as Quicksilver's sister poses a threat to the entire multiverse whether she's in the MCU or not.
