The television adaptation of The Rainmaker was given a series order by USA Network in June 2024 as part of the cable channel's overall push to get back into scripted programming. The project hails from Lionsgate Television and Blumhouse Television. Michael Sietzman, who previously worked on the drama series Code Black, is serving as showrunner and executive producer, with David Gernert, Grisham, and Blumhouse's Jason Blum also among the executive producers.

It was recently announced that The Rainmaker will premiere on August 15 at 10 PM ET on USA Network. Along with confirmation of the release date, the legal drama unveiled a trailer. The cable channel also unveiled some first-look photos, highlighting key cast . Sietzman also shared a statement about what it is about the new adaptation of Grisham's novel that will resonate with audiences:

"The Rainmaker began as John Grisham’s fastest-selling novel, then became a feature film, and now, it’s a TV series. What is it about this story that keeps drawing people in? Maybe it’s the David-and-Goliath legal thriller, the dangerous romance or the coming-of-age story. For me, above all, it’s the characters. They jumped off the page in John’s book and were a joy to expand upon in our show. Not to mention, Milo Callaghan, who plays Rudy Baylor, is your next crush."

It Features Some Familiar Faces

The Rainmaker is led by Milo Callaghan (Rivals, Dune: Prophecy) as Rudy Baylor, taking over the role played by Damon in the 1997 film. He'll be ed by John Slattery, best known for his role as Roger Sterling in the seminal drama Mad Men, who will play legal titan Leo F. Drummond. Madison Iseman (Jumanji: The Next Level) will play Sarah Plankmore, Rudy's ex-girlfriend from law school, while The Lincoln Lawyer's Lana Parrilla stars as Jocelyn "Bruiser" Stone, Rudy's boss.

The legal drama's ensemble also features P.J. Byrne (The Boys, Big Little Lies) as Deck Shifflet, described as an “unsentimental paralawyer” who failed the bar exam several times. Robyn Cara (Bodkin) will play Kelly Riker, a woman trapped in an abusive relationship and a neighbor to Rudy.

Dan Fogler (The Offer) has the role of Melvin Pritcher, a nurse with an explosive secret at the heart of a vast conspiracy. Wade Briggs (Foundation) is likewise part of the main cast, playing Leo's enforcer Brad Noonan. Tommie Earl Jenkins (Netflix's Wednesday) rounds out the ensemble, recurring as Prince Thomas, the owner of a bar where Rudy works.

Rudy Uncovers A Conspiracy

Based on the official synopsis for The Rainmaker, the story will follow Rudy Baylor, who is just out of law school and has to square off against the legendary lawyer Leo F. Drummond as well as Sarah Plankmore, his ex-girlfriend from law school. Rudy has a history with Leo beyond being rivals on a case, having worked with the courtroom titan for a time before getting fired. Alongside his boss, Jocelyn "Bruiser" Stone, and the paralegal Deck Shifflet, Rudy and the team uncover two conspiracies that add to the mystery surrounding the death of their client's son.

The Show Will Also Be Available To Stream

The Rainmaker season 1 consists of 10 episodes, with the first episode releasing on August 15. Episodes will be available to stream on Peacock a week after airing on USA Network, a delay which could speak to the goal of prioritizing the cable channel amid its renewed focus on scripted shows.

It Offers An Extended Preview

The official trailer for The Rainmaker runs for over two minutes, painting the legal drama in a lighter tone than the film adaptation, though it will undoubtedly lean into the thriller aspect, considering the conspiracies at its heart. It's reminiscent of Suits, one of the defining USA Network originals, which found a new audience in the U.S. when it was added to Netflix in mid-2023. There's romance, humor, and a protagonist who may be in over his head, but we'll find out when it debuts this summer.
