Ready Player One grossed over $607 million at the worldwide box office in 2018 and immediately spurred discussions about a potential sequel, which picked up in 2020 when Ernest Cline published his sequel novel titled Ready Player Two. Shortly after, the author announced that a film adaptation was in the early stages of development. Despite Cline's comment, coupled with Spielberg confirming his involvement as producer, a Ready Player Two movie hasn't officially received the green light from Warner Bros.

Spielberg's involvement in Ready Player Two, even as a producer, is still somewhat surprising considering he has generally been averse to sequels throughout his illustrious career, outside of Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. However, he does frequently produce projects without having much hands-on involvement in their development, with recent examples including Maestro, The Color Purple, Halo, and Masters of the Air. As Ready Player Two progresses through development, the full extent of Spielberg's involvement as a producer should become clearer.
