Annihilation 2099 #3 efficiently tells the origin story of Ross Romero in a single issue, effectively illustrating why his new Red Hulk has officially earned the “strangest man of all time” title. Following his orders to retrieve biomaterial from another planet, he is betrayed by another team member and ends up trapped and slowly decaying on Ego the Living Planet. Eating a mysterious plant created by Ego, Romero undergoes a shocking and horrific transformation that turns him into an abominable red beast filled with rage and raw power.

As the new Red Hulk’s origin swaps gamma radiation for the Power Primordial, Ross Romero seemingly becomes one of the strangest and strongest Hulks in Marvel history. While Romero merges with Ego, his red suit attaches to himself to create the crimson techno-organic monster. The issue’s artist and character designer for the new Red Hulk, Pete Woods, drew inspiration from not only Jack Kirby but legendary artist and Alien Xenomorph designer H. R. Giger to craft a strange Marvel hero that even sures the bizarre nature of the original Bruce Banner Hulk.
