During the Xbox + Bethesda Games Showcase, players got an in-depth look at the playable characters in Arkane Austin's new game, Redfall. In this new trailer, players also got their first look at gameplay for the game. This gameplay showed off some of the differences between characters, and how the gunplay works for all characters.
Coming in the first half of 2023, Redfall is a cooperative multiplayer game focused on the fictional small town of Redfall, Massachusetts, which has had its tourist town attractions overtaken by the presence of vampires and cults. The gameplay seems to have taken inspiration from the Borderlands and Left 4 Dead series. In the new trailer, these similarities were magnified, as players got a look at the Borderlands-like weapon systems and skill trees. While it might be more action-oriented than recent co-op horror games like Back 4 Blood, Phasmophobia, and others, Redfall should have an audience for players looking for a new co-op game to add to their library.
In the new trailer, Redfall showed off four characters, and some of their abilities. With different weapons, abilities, and backgrounds for each character, Redfall promises an interesting experience for all players. Whether players choose to play alone or with friends, choosing a character will be a vital part of Redfall. With that being said, here are all four playable characters shown off in Xbox's Redfall gameplay trailer.
Jacob Boyer Is Redfall's Sharpshooter
Jacob Boyer serves a role as a sharpshooter in Redfall. Jacob is a former military sniper who now works as a mercenary. It doesn't seem like weapons will necessarily be exclusive to different characters, with Redfall's new gameplay trailer showing a menu with options for different weapons. However, Jacob's abilities may make him most suitable to dispose of vampires from a distance using a sniper.
During the trailer, Jacob is specifically seen using a cloaking ability. He also has scouting capabilities, using his mysterious vampiric eye and spectral raven partner. Judging by the environments shown in the trailer, it seems that the various areas of the game will have many vantage points and a large focus on verticality. Using his invisibility in tandem with the vantage points, Boyer seems like he'll be the best damage-dealing character for any Redfall squad. The focus on verticality is much different than other co-op shooters, and could put Redfall above co-op shooters like Left 4 Dead. However, Jacob may struggle when it comes to close-quarters encounters with vampires.
Confirmed Redfall Characters - Remi De La Rosa Is The Team's Engineer
Another hero who can deal heavy damage for the team in Redfall, Remi De La Rosa is a combat engineer who specializes in robotics. Remi doesn't fight the vampires of Redfall by herself, though. With Remi is her robot sidekick, Bribón. Bribón offers additional firepower for the team (and also gets very excited when he does a good job).
Remi and Bribón will be perfect candidates for any Redfall squad on the frontlines. Because of this, Remi is best armed with close-range weapons like shotguns or pistols. This close range will be helpful in disposing of the vampiric threats of Redfall, Massachusetts, especially with innovative monster designs that rival 2021's Back 4 Blood. Overall, any player who wants to be on the frontlines ready to plunge a stake into the heart of the vampires will feel at home with Remi.
Redfall Character Devinder Sets Traps For Vampires
A less traditional shooter character, Devinder has some interesting mechanics that set him apart from the rest of the Redfall crew. As a former cryptozoologist and inventor, Devinder has homemade weapons to dispose of the vampire threat. These can take the form of his own weapons, or even traps to help stun or dispose of vampires. Devinder will offer a more defensive role in Redfall, with creative traps that can dispose of the vampiric menace. While not quite as deep as the also Vampire-themed V Rising's base-building, Dev should be able to use his inventions to protect his team.
In addition to his background with hunting cryptids, it seems Dev is a content creator as well. With a GoPro-like camera on his jacket, Devinder seems just as interested in researching and recording the vampires of Redfall as much as he is in hunting them. This interest in the vampires may lead to some fun interactions with him and the other characters, as his interest and curiosity in the vampire opposition balances with the rest of the cast's fear.
Layla's Telekinetic Powers Provide For Her Redfall Squad
While not a vampire, Redfall's Layla has some supernatural abilities of her own. While it's unclear if she's the lead character in the game, she seems to be the center of the game's marketing so far. It's possible that the emergence of Layla's telekinetic powers could be connected to the vampires that have taken over the town of Redfall.
Similar to Arkane's work on the Dishonored games, Layla's abilities seem to focus on and mobility for the team, and bear a bit of similarity. An elevator that she can create helps give team a boost to previously unreachable heights. This elevator ability should be a particularly good ability when paired with Jacob's sharpshooting and recon powers. In addition, a telekinetic shield can help absorb incoming damage for the rest of her team. Overall, Layla seems like a character who can excel both on the frontlines and in hanging back as a character.
Additional Characters Could Come To Redfall After Release
There are only four characters confirmed for Redfall so far, but there's the possibility that more could come after release. It may be too early to start thinking about post-release plans, and even though Redfall is a story-driven co-op title, it could be that more characters come to the game eventually. Regardless, the four playable figures revealed by Arkane so far boast a great deal of variety, each having their own unique designs and roles to play in co-op.
Redfall's gameplay reveal trailer showed off interesting features, gunplay and inventive enemy design, but the highlight was the four playable characters. With diversity in personality, looks, and playstyle, Redfall should have fun characters for everyone in any Redfall squad to choose from. Redfall releases in the first half of 2022 on Xbox platforms and PC, and will be a day one release on Xbox Game .
