Summer Game Fest saved the best for dead last, as the long-awaited Resident Evil 9, now revealed to be named Resident Evil Requiem, has finally been announced. Teased halfway through the show, Capcom promised to show fans more about the project when the series turns 30 in 2026, but then surprised the audience by dropping a full-length trailer for RE9 as the event’s final reveal.
The game seems to follow a new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, as she investigates a series of strange deaths and returns to the site of her mother’s death at the Remwood Hotel. The trailer also reveals a return to a bombed-out Raccoon City, left in rubble after the events of Resident Evil 3. Based on the trailer, RE9 will be atmospheric and terrifying, which may indicate a shift away from the more action-oriented Resident Evil Village.
Resident Evil 9: Requiem Release Date & Platforms
Requiem Will Be Available On Both Console And PC
Thankfully, the wait won’t be too long for Resident Evil Requiem, as the very end of the trailer confirmed its release date as February 27, 2026. The ninth mainline entry into the Resident Evil series will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, just like all other RE games. There's always a chance it could eventually come to the Nintendo Switch 2 now that Nintendo has a more powerful console on the market, but if it will, it hasn't been announced.

RE9 Is Called Resident Evil Requiem & Already Has A Release Date
Resident Evil 9 has finally been revealed, called Resident Evil Requiem, and it stars a new protagonist and already has a release date set.
There hasn’t been any information yet on special editions or pre-orders of the game, since it’s not releasing until next spring, but it's likely that the game will have some sort of collector’s edition for fans. Both Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4: Remake, the most recent releases in the series, had collector’s edition releases that included figures of main characters and various artbooks or maps, so RE9 should have one as well.
Resident Evil Requiem Gameplay Details
A Return To Raccoon City
Nothing has been confirmed regarding Resident Evil Requiem’s gameplay yet, but the atmosphere of the trailer seems to suggest a focus on horror over action. Leaks have suggested that the game may abandon the first-person perspective that made RE7 and RE8 so unique for the series in favor of returning to a third-person perspective, which may impact the scare factor of the game. Whether this is a good idea or even something that's actually happening is still up in the air.
The host of Summer Game Fest, Geoff Keighley, said that RE9 is a “bold shift for the franchise both in tone and gameplay”, which hints towards changes that may be in line with what leaks have suggested. The official Resident Evil website doesn’t provide much information on what gameplay players can expect, though it does state that “a new era of survival horror begins in 2026” and that “technological advancements combined with the development team’s depth of experience combine in a story with rich characters and gameplay that’s more immersive than ever before”.
Everything We Know About Resident Evil Requiem’s Story
Grace Ashcroft May Be The New Protagonist
All the information for Resident Evil Requiem comes from the reveal trailer, which introduces players to some things new and some things old for the series. First and foremost, RE9 may have revealed its new protagonist, FBI technical analyst Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft. Alyssa, an investigative journalist, was one of eight playable characters in 2004’s Resident Evil Outbreak, which seems to confirm she survived Raccoon City, but later met her end at the Wrenwood Hotel.
As seen in the trailer, Grace is sent back to that hotel by her boss to help in the investigation of a series of mysterious illnesses and deaths and to face her past. The investigation seemingly goes poorly, as Grace is later strapped to a gurney upside down, and a male voice says that she’s the special one he’s been searching for. There are flashes of a man in a black hooded coat that covers his face throughout the trailer, so he may be connected to the hotel and Alyssa Ashcroft’s death.

These Forgotten Resident Evil Games Don't Get Enough Love, But They're Must-Plays If You're A True Fan
The Resident Evil Wii rail shooters are very important games in of their story, but they've sadly been forgotten and need a remaster.
The rest of the trailer reveals a series of shots of a destroyed Raccoon City, including a giant crater in the center, partially reduced to rubble after the city was nuked at the end of Resident Evil 3. The iconic police station, or at least its most important iconography, is still standing, which may imply Resident Evil Requiem players are returning to the city and any T-Virus-infected monsters that survived the bomb.
