Resident Evil movie, with the character having never appeared in any of the games. Alice and her journey were inspired by Alice In Wonderland, with Jovovich's character also descending into a world filled with bizarre creatures. The success of 2002's Resident Evil saw the movie franchise evolve into its own entity, occasionally borrowing characters and ideas from the video games but ultimately having little connection to them.

The Resident Evil movie franchise was very successful too, with the six movies collectively grossing over $1 billion worldwide. Jovovich and her creative partner/husband Paul W.S. Anderson called it a day with the series after 2017's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. This saw Alice race against time to find an airborne antidote to the t-Virus that destroyed the planet and featured her last showdown with Umbrella. The sequel also gave insight into Alice's fractured past, revealing she was really a clone of Alicia Marcus, the co-owner of Umbrella.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter even redeemed the Red Queen, while revealing the murderous A.I. was based on the likeness of young Alicia. Given how sloppy the Resident Evil movies' overarching storyline was, Resident Evil: Afterlife opening with Alice raiding an Umbrella HQ with an army of clones. However, the fifth movie Resident Evil: Retribution essentially spoiled Resident Evil: The Final Chapter's big Alice twist a film early.

Resident Evil: Retribution reveals that Umbrella has an underwater "testing" facility, where they dump clones into facsimiles of cities like New York and unleash creatures to see how they react. The movie opens with a clone of Alice coming under attack in a fake version of Raccoon City before later being killed. Alice and Ada Wong (Li Bingbing) later come across this dead duplicate, with Resident Evil: Retribution's (which resurrected Michelle Rodriguez's Rain) Ada explaining Alice is one of "50 basic models" used to populate the tests. She also, tellingly, reveals these clones have many lives; in one scenario they could be a housewife or a "soldier working for Umbrella."

The latter comment telegraphs Resident Evil: The Final Chapter's Alice clone twist in a major way, though the character doesn't react to the implications of the comment. Given the sheer number of duplicates Alice encountered in previous Resident Evil movies and the fact she has no memory of her past, it's odd that Milla Jovovich's Alice never appeared to consider this possibility before. Resident Evil: Retribution suggests Anderson had a clear end in mind for the series and planted this major clue early on - even though it probably spoiled the surprise for more savvy viewers.
