While many other video game series that began on Sony's first console have been either forgotten or dormant, Capcom's survival horror games have only improved in quality over the years, bar the occasional stumble in the mid-2000s. With modern Resident Evil titles boasting some of the best graphics around, it's easy to forget its roots.
Posted to Reddit by Red-Raptor3, the fan shared an image they created to illustrate the graphical improvements the Resident Evil franchise has experienced by posing recreated models of the "Core Five" alongside their modern counterparts.
The blocky, pixelated forms of Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Rebecca Chambers, Claire Redfield, and Leon S. Kennedy stand in stark comparison to how they're realistically depicted in the latest CG movie Death Island. The film's character designs borrow many elements from Capcom's recent remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4, all of which were lauded upon their release.

The Resident Evil franchise boasts a vast collection of games, movies, and other content, however where in the timeline do the animated films reside?
Resident Evil Gets Better With Age
Explaining how they were able to Death Island with the original characters, Red-Raptor3 wrote that they used a pixel effect on the image from the film before using PowerPoint to combine the edited still with models from the older games that were posed in Garry's Mod, software that facilitates and hosts -generated content. They also debunked claims that generative AI was used to create the picture. It's a compelling touchstone to display just how much Resident Evil's visuals, and indeed graphics across the industry, have improved since the first game's release in 1996.
Rebecca Chambers also a playable character in the multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight.
While the "Core Five" are lovingly depicted in the image, some may question the inclusion of Rebecca Chambers given that she's appeared in far fewer games than her colleagues. She served as a ing character in the first Resident Evil before going on to star in her own game, Resident Evil 0 in 2002, and appearing in Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles in 2007 and The Mercenaries 3D in 2011. Outside of that, she just has cameo appearances in Resident Evil 2 and 5, playing no role in the main narrative.
Capcom Can't Lose With Resident Evil

As for the overarching narrative, there's still no word on what's happening with a potential Resident Evil 9.
