Shadows of Rose, an expansion for Resident Evil Village DLC Shadows of Rose looks to reuse characters, too, making it a mirror to Majora's Mask.
Released in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time brought the beloved series onto the Nintendo 64 and brought Hyrule to life with 3D graphics. The title was a massive success, leading Nintendo to release a sequel titled Majora's Mask only two years later. Despite taking place in a new world called Termina, rather than the series' iconic Hyrule, Majora's Mask reuses a number of gameplay mechanics and character models from its predecessor. This is considered an artistic decision, however, since Termina is presented as a parallel world that exists separately from Hyrule. In this way the Termina and Hyrule doppelgängers in Majora's Mask make the series' darkest installment even more unsettling, while also helping cut development time down considerably.
Managing to sur the creepiness of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is Resident Evil Village, the eighth installment in the long-running survival horror franchise. Ethan, protagonist of Resident Evil 7, travels to a rural European town in search of his missing daughter, but he is soon accosted by all manner of monsters including werewolves and vampires. The game launched back in May 2021, and a long-awaited Resident Evil Village DLC will let players revisit familiar sights and run into familiar characters in a way that feels more than a little like Majora's Mask.
Shadows Of Rose & Majora's Mask Both Feature Parallel Worlds
Like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the Shadows of Rose DLC will take Resident Evil Village players to an unsettling parallel version of a familiar world. The expansion will see Ethan Winters' daughter Rosemary trapped in the parallel dimension of Megamycete, which recreates the main game's terrifying village based on her memories of it. The DLC's trailer shows Rose encountering a doppelgänger of herself, and the ordinarily friendly Duke will apparently appear as a villain. By taking recognizable characters from Resident Evil Village and casting them in unique new roles, Shadows of Rose is taking cues from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
The Resident Evil Village DLC will reintroduce the Duke as an antagonist, despite his once-friendly demeanor, so it seems likely that other familiar faces will also return in interesting new roles. This can make Shadows of Rose a similar experience to Majora's Mask, where players see familiar faces but are unsettled by how the parallel world has warped them. The Resident Evil Village expansion will be available on October 28, coming just in time for a horrific Halloween spent in a parallel universe.
