Dan Harmon already has the perfect story for the ending of Rick and Morty, and while it works flawlessly, it probably isn't going to happen.

Ian Cardoni as Rick Sanchez

Rick Sanchez in deep thought on Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1 finally confirmed the identity of the voice actor tasked with filling the shoes of Roiland for Rick Sanchez: Ian Cardoni. In the show, Rick is a brilliant scientist, albeit a reckless alcoholic with an abusive and nihilistic attitude. He causes many more problems than he fixes as a scientist and, when it came to his voice actor, Roiland was somewhat irreplaceable before his deplorable allegations. However, Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1 proved that this was not the case with Cardoni providing the voice for Rick in an almost seamless transition.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rick and Morty co-creators Scott Marder and Dan Harmon revealed their intention to make the transition between Roiland's voice and the new actors as unrecognizable as possible. This report explained how Marder and Harmon settled on Cardoni for the voice of Rick Sanchez. Cardoni's previous experience on Larry David's Clear History as well as voicing promos for Resident Alien, Apple TV+, and WWE meant that the voice actor had a wide-range of vocal talents that allowed Rick Sanchez to return in Rick and Morty season 7 as if nothing had ever changed behind-the-scenes.

Harry Belden as Morty Smith

Rick Sanchez drools as Morty Smith panics in Rick and Morty.

The second major character from the Rick and Morty season 7 cast that needed to be replaced was Morty Smith with newcomer Harry Belden adequately stepping up to the plate. Morty is the grandson of Rick and the main protagonist of the series. He goes on many adventures with Rick and ends up in danger every step of the way. While Roiland was able to split time between Rick and Morty in the series himself, the show opted to bring in two different voice actors to carry on the roles following his departure.

As such, the creatives behind Rick and Morty settled on Belden. As was the case with Cardoni, Belden has a range of voice acting credits to his name that led to him being cast as the iconic voice of Morty. From roles in Adult Swim’s Joe Pera Talks With You and Fox’s Proven Innocent to NBC’s Chicago Med, Belden also proved that he had the capabilities to bring Morty to life without Roiland with ease.

Chris Parnell as Jerry Smith

Jerry on the phone in Rick and morty

Moving away from the recasting of Rick and Morty, Chris Parnell plays Jerry Smith in the Rick and Morty season 7 cast after doing so in the prior six seasons. Jerry is Morty's father, Beth's husband, and Summer's dad. He is mostly depicted as a loser who is always worried about things and never gets along with Rick. Parnell is an actor who got his break after he moved to Los Angeles to audition for the Groundlings comedy troupe. He got his biggest break when he signed on as a cast member on Saturday Night Live.

Parnell caught the world's attention when he worked with Andy Samberg in his music videos and in the famous sketch "More Cowbell" with Christopher Walken. He has voiced roles in the Hotel Transylvania series (as Fly and Stan the Fisherman) and is a regular on Archer, where he voices Cyrill Figgis and Buck Henry. In 2023, he voiced Agent Slade Wilson in the animated series, My Adventures with Superman.

Spencer Grammer as Summer Smith

Summer Smith in Rick and Morty Season 6

Another returning voice actor for Rick and Morty season 7 is Spencer Grammer as Summer Smith. Summer is Jerry and Beth's daughter and Morty's sister. She is a teenage girl who replaced the real Summer after Rick's family died. She is also the only member of the family who knows she is not the original version of herself. Grammer is an actor born in Los Angeles who started as a child actor on the sitcom Cheers. That was thanks to the fact that her father, Kelsey Grammer, was one of that show's stars.

Grammer's first main lead role was in the ABC Family series Greek, where she played Casey Cartwright. Over her career, she mostly appeared in small one-shot roles in shows like CSI, CSI: NY, Royal Pains, Chicago PD, and Grey's Anatomy. She also got a more central role in the 2017 series Graves and played Beth Miller in the 2018 fantasy series Tell Me a Story.

Sarah Chalke as Beth Smith & Space Beth

Rick and Morty Clone Beth Froopyland

As with Parnell and Grammer, Sarah Chalke returns from previous seasons for the cast of Rick and Morty season 7 as Beth Smith. Beth is Morty and Summer's mother and Rick's daughter, although she is a replacement like both Jerry and Summer. She is the real breadwinner of her family, although that often causes problems with her husband Jerry. Chalke plays both Beth and Space Beth, who is either the original Beth or a clone of her. Chalke is a Canadian actor who started acting in musical theater when she was only eight.

She enjoyed her major breakout in the sitcom Scrubs in 2001, where she played Dr. Elliot Reid, one of the main cast for all nine seasons of the show. She also had roles in movies like Ernest Goes to School, Chaos Theory, and Mother's Day. However, most of her experience came on TV, with roles in Cougar Town, How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life), Roseanne, and Firefly Lane.

Kari Wahlgren as Space Cruiser

Rick and Morty in the Space Cruiser.

Kari Wahlgren plays the Space Cruiser in the Rick and Morty season 7 cast, Rick's flying vehicle. The Space Cruiser is an interdisciplinary vehicle that Rick built that can make space travel easy with Wahlgren providing the voice of the cruiser's AI. At one point in the series, it was revealed that the AI was known as D.I.A.N.E., based on Rick's deceased wife Diane. Wahlgren is an actor from Kansas who graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in theater. She then moved on to anime work and became a star voice actor.

Wahlgren has several major anime roles to her name including in Witch Hunter Robin, Samurai Champloo, FLCL, and Immortal Grand Prix. For American animation fans, she also has a long list of credits. She has voiced characters in Phineas and Ferb, King Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, The Fairly OddParents, and Ben 10. She also has voiced the character Ashe in the video game Final Fantasy XII.

Keith Davis as President Curtis

The President of the United States in Rick and Morty

Keith David voices President Curtis, one of the antagonists that could return to the Rick and Morty season 7 cast. He appeared as a guest character in the first three seasons before showing back up as a recurring character in seasons 5 and 6. David is an actor from New York City who has had a massively successful acting career in the past. He got his start acting in 1980 and one of his first roles was an iconic one, as he appeared as one of the main characters in John Carpenter's The Thing.

David also was part of one of the most infamous fight scenes in movie history, as he and Rowdy Roddy Piper had an alley fight that lasted for six minutes without stopping in the John Carpenter sci-fi movie They Live. David also appeared in Platoon, Pitch Black, There's Something About Mary, Barbershop, and Requiem for a Dream. For voice acting, he had major roles in the 90s in both Gargoyles (as Goliath) and Spawn (as Spawn).

Phil Hendrie As Principal Gene Vagina

Principal Gene Vagina in Rick and Morty

Phil Hendrie plays Principal Vagina in the Rick and Morty season 7 cast. Principal Vagina is the high school principal, a man completely incompetent at his job, and he is very insecure about his last name. Principal Vagina was a recurring cast member in the first four seasons and returned in season 6 as a guest. Hendeie is an actor from California who got his start in entertainment as a radio DJ in Florida. While working in radio, he invented a series of fictional characters that he voiced in radio sketches.

He left radio in 2006 while he was working on the NBC sitcom Teachers as Dick Green. However, before this, he had gotten a job voicing characters on both King of the Hill and Futurama. He also voiced the computer AI in Team America: World Police. His other voice work has been heard in F is for Family and The Midnight Gospel.

John Allen as Mr. Poopybutthole

Mr Poopybutthole in Rick and Morty season 6

Mr. Poopybutthole is another character that Rick and Morty season 7 needed to replace regarding a voice actor, especially given episode 1's large focus on the character. Another Roiland character, Mr. Poopybutthole is a long-time family friend of the Smiths. While the aforementioned THR interview floated the idea of Belden or Cardoni voicing Mr. Poopybutthole as Roiland did, Marder and Harmon revealed that a voice actor named John Allen came in for the role. Allen also has a wealth of voice-acting experience from anime such as Demon Slayer, Genshin Impact, Dragon Ball Super, and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure to name but a few.

Tom Kenny as Squanchy and Gene

Squanchy and Gene from Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1

Concerning Rick and Morty's season 7 premiere, the cast had several returning actors from previous seasons. One of these was Tom Kenny as Squanchy and Gene. Concerning the former, Squanchy is an anthropomorphic cat-like creature who has long been a close friend of Rick's, often engaging in drinking sessions and other intergalactic shenanigans with Rick and their group of friends. Kenny has voiced Squanchy since the character's first appearance and continues to provide the voice for the role in Rick and Morty season 7.

Another tagalong with Rick's group in Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1 was Gene. Gene is a minor character who has appeared in prior seasons of the show as the Smiths' neighbor. In the opener of Rick and Morty season 7, Rick recruits Gene as a token sober person in his group during the intervention he has planned for Mr. Poopybutthole.

Dan Harmon as Birdperson

Rick and Birdperson.

Like Squanchy, Birdperson is another recurring close friend of Rick's who returned for Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1. Since Birdperson's debut, the character has been voiced by the show's co-creator Dan Harmon. The same is the case for Rick and Morty season 7 with Harmon continuing to voice the iconic side character.

Scott Chernoff as Gearhead

Birdperson, Squanchy, Gearhead, and Rick talk to Gene as he sits on a ride-on lawnmower beside a portal in Rick and Morty season 7

Rounding out Rick's regular crew in Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1 was Gearhead, a character voiced by Scott Chernoff. Chernoff has voiced Gearhead since his first appearance in the show. Aside from Gearhead, Birdperson, Squanchy, and Mr. Poopybutthole, Rick's crew in Rick and Morty season 7 consisted of two different characters, one being Gene - the Smiths' neighbor - and the other a celebrity guest cameo.

Hugh Jackman As Himself

Hugh Jackman popping a bottle of champagne in Rick & Morty season 7

A surprise entry in Rick and Morty season 7's premiere was Hugh Jackman who voiced a fictionalized version of himself. Rick and Morty is no stranger to huge actors and actresses providing guest star roles or cameos from the likes of John Oliver, David Cross, Alfred Molina, and the duo of Key and Peele to name a tiny handful. With Rick and Morty season 7, Jackman continues this trend by voicing a fictionalized version of himself who tags along with Rick, Mr. Poopybutthole, and the rest of their ragtag crew.

Mr. Meeseeks - Unknown

Mister Meeseeks look angry in Rick and Morty

Mr. Meeseeks is another Justin Roiland character that the Rick and Morty season 7 cast needs to replace. Mr. Meeseeks is the name of all the Meeseeks that are summoned by activating a Mr. Meeseeks Box. They are friendly, cheerful, and helpful — mostly. One person who might be a perfect replacement for the Meeseeks actor is YouTube star Sean Kelly, who has perfectly impersonated Mr. Meeseeks on his YouTube channel. However, there are a lot of Roiland Rick and Morty characters that could be replaced as he also voiced Taddy Mason, Cromulons, Noob-Noob, Glar, and Mr. Frundles on Rick and Morty.
