Rick and Morty season 8 has officially been confirmed, and updates are already pouring in about the future of the popular animated series. Debuting back in 2013, the raunchy cartoon follows a nihilistic scientist named Rick Sanchez as he takes his overly anxious grandson Morty on adventures in different dimensions. Co-created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty quickly set itself apart from other adult animated shows with its heady concepts and pitch-black humor.

Despite universal acclaim across its first six seasons, Rick and Morty was nearly completely derailed when serious allegations were leveled against co-creator Justin Roiland. This prompted his firing from the series and necessitated a search for new voice actors who could step into the roles that Roiland portrayed. When season 7 began in late 2023, it was obvious that Rick and Morty was different after Roiland's exit, but the popular sci-fi comedy lost none of its worldwide appeal. As such, Rick and Morty has not only been green-lit for season 8, but seasons 9 and 10 as well.

Though the full ensemble hasn't been confirmed, the cast of Rick and Morty season 8 won't be much different from the cast of season 7. While it is impossible to predict what exactly will happen in Rick and Morty season 8, Dan Harmon's comments about it being a return to form does offer some clues. One certain thing is that Rick and his grandson will get into a host of interdimensional trouble, with a distinctly existential edge. Season 7's dour tone isn't unusual for the series, which often uses humor to tell much deeper tales. Season 7 saw Rick lose his motivation for adventure, which completely changes the dynamic. This could allow for a more stripped-down season 8, but predicting plot points is impossible.

The trailer for season 8 offered some clues, but they are still vague. One adventure will see the titular duo fighting a band of Christian-themed soldiers over what appears to be an Easter egg, while another sees the return of Space Beth. Back on Earth, Jerry will be afflicted by something that causes him to devour a head of lettuce like a strange animal, and the hapless dad will also find himself trapped in a crystal by Beth for some unknown reason. The Citadel is also teased, and multiple versions of the main characters are expected to appear.

Jerry smiles smugly as Rick wields a carving knife at a Christmas dinner table in Rick and Morty season 6

With 2024 coming to a close, a teaser trailer for Rick and Morty season 8 was revealed in December that shows Rick is up to his usual tricks. Consisting of a single scene from an episode, the trailer reveals that Rick is auditioning various human and alien actors for the role of Jerry. Rick's plans are thwarted when the rest of his family arrives and discovers he's trying to replace Jerry, though he insists he'll keep in touch with his potential actors.

In March 2025, Adult Swim dropped another teaser scene from Rick and Morty season 8 that teases one of the duo's adventures. The brief scene sees Rick and Morty arrive on a mysterious planet that takes the holiday of Easter very seriously. Rick finds an artifact that resembles a gigantic Easter egg, and there are visual clues that a large rabbit monster will factor into the story somehow. Soon, Rick and his grandson are accosted by "Space Christians", who proceed to give the pair a hard time.

After a host of teases, Adult Swim finally revealed a full trailer for Rick and Morty season 8 in April. Quickly cutting from one action-packed scene to the next, it's clear from the trailer that the eighth season will see the eponymous duo and others going on a myriad of interdimensional adventures, for better or worse. Rick and Morty fight Christian soldiers over an egg, and also evade enemies in a space chase. Jerry is compelled to eat lettuce like a wild animal for some reason, while the return of The Citadel and Space Beth is shown.
