Marvel has unveiled an all-new Gambit and Rogue make up one of the most popular romantic couples in X-Men history, yet they have been on again/off again for many years–but a new book, and logo, shows this is changing. Rogue and Gambit’s first issue goes on sale in print and digital March 15, 2023.
Since Rogue and Gambit's first interaction in 1991’s X-Men #1, there has been undeniable chemistry between them. Both of them came from rough backgrounds; Rogue had been a villain who put Carol Danvers temporarily out of commission and Gambit had a direct role in the Mutant Massacre. This gave the two mutants common ground. Though they were attracted to each other from the start, Rogue’s abilities that allow her to sap another person’s life force and powers, were a huge stumbling block. Despite his dashing, bad-boy persona, Gambit genuinely loves Rogue, and she loves him. The two were wed in 2017’s X-Men Gold #30 and subsequently received their own title: Mr. and Mrs. X. Now, with the Krakoa era continuing onward, Rogue and Gambit are getting a new book–one that will show their marriage is permanent, and one of the best things to happen to either one of them.
Steve Morris’ cover to Rogue and Gambit #1 was unveiled by Rogue is ready to punch someone into orbit. The precognitive mutant Destiny hangs in the background. Yet what is fascinating about the cover is its logo–Rogue’s name contains a heart while Gambit’s has a spade in it. The spade, a common symbol in card games, is an obvious call-out to Gambit’s weapons of choice; the heart represents Rogue’s life and power draining abilities. Mixing their two symbols together in the logo is proof Marvel is serious about the marriage, and that it is here to stay. The series will be written by Stephanie Phillips and illustrated by Carlos Gomez.
Rogue And Gambit Are The Best X-Couple
The Rogue and Gambit relationship is one of the strongest in X-Men history, and readers have wished for them to remain together. Judging from the new logo, Marvel has heard fans, and is leaving them together permanently. Many couples in the X-Universe work better in “relationship limbo” but there is no denying Rogue and Gambit work better as a unit. Their previous series, Mr. and Mrs. X, was a joyous read, showing the potential the two had as a married couple. They balance each other out, and have helped one another work through their inner demons–signs of a strong and healthy relationship; it is ironic that the one X-Man who cannot have physical with anyone would have one of its most stable relationships.
Rogue and Gambit’s “happily ever after” is also the perfect antidote to the gloom and doom that is a characteristic of the X-Men titles; this is especially true in the relationship department, as the franchise is littered with many broken couples. Rogue and Gambit’s marriage, on other hand, is here to stay and the logo for their new titles proves it.
