Here's who played Darth Vader in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and why Hayden Christensen didn't return to reprise the role. While the first Star Wars spinoff movie primarily focused on a new group of characters, but it also featured a franchise icon. Rogue One marked the return of Darth Vader to the big screen, where he played a small, yet meaningful, ing role. Vader had two notable sequences that helped reestablish his status as one of cinema's most-feared villains: his conversation with Director Krennic on Mustafar and the famous hallway sequence where he slaughtered a group of Rebel soldiers looking to get away with the Death Star plans.
Prior to Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, which ended the prequel trilogy. There, Christensen donned the costume, portraying Vader's first moments in his life suit. With the character returning in Rogue One, some wondered if Christensen would come back to be Vader's physical presence, but Lucasfilm instead looked to others for the role. Christensen returned to play Vader once more in the Disney+ Star Wars show Obi-Wan Kenobi, but this wouldn't be until 2022, well over a decade after Episode III was released.
The place of the spin-off movie in the voiced by James Earl Jones, who famously portrayed the character in the original Star Wars trilogy. Here's why Hayden Christensen didn't play Darth Vader in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Rogue One Never Showed Unmasked Vader
During the buildup to Rogue One's premiere, there were rumors concerning Christensen's potential involvement. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed he wasn't in the film months before it came out. As much as viewers would have liked to see Christensen return, it wasn't a necessity for Rogue One, since the character was in the costume for the entire time. Similar to the original trilogy, the filmmakers needed to find a suitable performer who could fill out Anakin Skywalker ever existed.
Anakin's Unmasked Appearance In Obi-Wan Kenobi Brought Back Christensen
Of course, Christensen returned to play Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show for Disney+ in 2022. Unlike Rogue One, Vader was explored as a humanized character, with his past life as Anakin Skywalker and his relationship with Obi-Wan Kenobi serving as central to the plot. As such, it made narrative sense for Vader to appear unmasked, both contemporarily and in flashbacks. Fans were delighted to see the return of Hayden Christensen in the role, too. Over a decade had ed since 2005's Revenge of the Sith. While many contemporary adult fans had been critical of his performance as Anakin Skywalker in the 00s, the children who grew up watching both the Star Wars Prequel and Original Trilogies post-release have almost nothing but fond memories of his portrayal. The timing of his return was perfect, too, with the nostalgia factor only adding to the anticipation of a Star Wars show that explored more of Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker's inter-trilogy years. Obi-Wan Kenobi definitely delivered on this, and it was also possibly Hayden Christensen's best portrayal of Vader so far. While he may not have been Darth Vader in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Hayden Christensen remains the definitive Anakin Skywalker.
