As Sam Wilson is preparing to split latest plan of Arnim Zola. As the two ready a plan of attack, they clasp hands in a pose reminiscent of cinema's most epic handshake.
Marvel announced in January that Sam Wilson was set to return to his old position as Captain America, as well as headline his own comic under the familiar mantle. However, instead of filling in for Rogers like last time, the two will be sharing the role with Sam as the public-facing Captain America and Steve taking on more covert work. To introduce the new status quo, Marvel is releasing a new book that will show why two Captain Americas are better than one.
Captain America #0 comes from the creative team of Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Tochi Onyebuchi, Mattie De Iulis, and Joe Caramagna. A new preview shows the digital terror that is Arnim Zola enact a plan to launch a rocket that will hyperevolve humanity into a race of dinosaurs. Fortunately, not one, but two shields take the robotic terror out with a round of powerful KLANGs. Both Sam and Steve arrive in their Captain America costumes and quickly form a plan to stop Zola's rocket. Before they depart, the allies give one another a powerful handshake that internet s and film buffs may recognize.
The handshake shared between the pair of Captains America seems quite similar to the "Epic Handshake" meme that's made its way through the internet for the last several years. Originating from the movie Predator, the meme comes from a scene in which Arnold Schwarzenegger's character greets his old war buddy, played by Carl Weathers, with a powerful handshake. The moment was beloved by fans for its overt machismo and has been used as an image to depict how two sides can come together over shared interests.
Steve and Sam have fought by one another for years and are close as allies can be. They've fought Hydra agents, aliens and all manner of superpowered villains. Much like Schwarzenegger and Weathers in Predator, their shared experience has forged a deep bond between the friends. As the two prepare for the next chapter in their superhero careers, fans may fear that Steve could wind up getting replaced or that Sam may lose his own independent identity. But the handshake the Captains share shows that no matter what happens, they'll be ing one another as equals. Nothing signifies a partnership or trust more than shaking hands, and Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers' own "Epic Handshake" marks a bold new era for the Captain America legacy.
Captain America #0 from Marvel Comics releases on April 20th.
