The fearsome DC's darkest characters, and it was only natural that he would be pitted against other horrifying monsters. The existential guardian of the green has had run ins with many terrible creatures over the years, but some were downright chilling.

From his mortal enemy Anton Arcane, to similar elementals like Blight, Swampy has a stable of villains a mile long. Despite the powerful roster of baddies he has faced, some villains from Swamp Thing were downright spooky compared to the usual enemies from DC comics.

Thrudvang

Thrudvang punches Swamp Thing from Swamp Thing

Seemingly a creature of infinite strength, Thrudvang was dispatched to collect Alec Holland after he was suddenly returned to his human form. Over a two-issue arc, the massive yellow elemental hunted Holland across the country in order to capture him because of his scientific knowledge. An agent for the Colossus Organization, he soon showed that he would resort to murder to get his way.

Against Swamp Thing, Thrudvang wouldn't be nearly as frightening, but the fact that he was after Alec Holland made him all the more terrifying. Unlike other monsters who merely possess superior strength, Thrudvang's elemental connection added another wrinkle to his arsenal of abilities.

Solus

Solus shoots a laser at Swamp Thing

As a member of a mysterious alien race, Solus viewed all living things on earth as his playthings, even the mighty Swamp Thing. Banished from his world for murdering their ruler, Solus lived out his days in exile aboard a space station. Rigging a transporter to beam beings up to his ship, Solus captured Swamp Thing and proceeded to torture him.

Despite being one of the most powerful DC heroes, it was frightening to see Swamp Thing so easily captured by technology. Though Swampy's connection to the natural world is what saved him, it seemed as if the one-off villain had his number. Swamp Thing would have more cosmic adventures in the future, but the early days of the book rarely featured alien villains like Solus.

Nukeface

Nukeface waves his arms in the air from Swamp Thing

Like a walking embodiment of the evil that man does to the planet earth, Nukeface was a villain ripped straight from the most terrifying science fiction of the 1950s. Appearing mysteriously in the swamps of Louisiana, Nukeface poisons everyone around him with the nuclear radiation that he craves. Gaining his powers from nuclear waste in a mine, the irradiated goon's touch is enough to cripple Swamp Thing.

Though he only appeared briefly in the comics, Nukeface left a big mark on readers during the Saga of the Swamp Thing era of the book. He was so terrifying because he seemed to harm others on a whim, and only wanted to consume more of his precious nuclear waste.

Kamara The Monkey King

Kamara laughs hysterically from Swamp Thing

some of the character's best quotes, but also took the story in strange new directions. Kamara appeared after being accidentally summoned by a spirit board, and he proceeded to terrorize the children living at the home that Abby worked for.

Able to assume any form that serves its purpose, Kamara was made stronger by the fear that it caused from the children. Finally settling on a haunting, almost simian appearance for his showdown with Swamp Thing, Kamara proved to be a difficult foe to defeat. Fortunately for the mean green, Etrigan the Demon arrived and helped vanquish the mighty creature.

Nebiros

Nebiros appears suddenly from Swamp Thing

Appearing first in Swamp Thing, Nebiros is a demon that has returned on several occasions to plague the DC universe. Released when Swamp Thing accidentally allowed his body to be possessed when Holland's soul was away, Nebiros quickly proved to be a terrifying foe on earth.

Possessing all of the power of a demonic entity, Nebiros has almost endless abilities when at full strength. Fortunately for Holland and the Swamp Thing, he was vanquished from his body, but that wouldn't keep the demon down for long. Over the years, Nebiros has returned to fight other DC heroes and he has only gotten stronger with time.

The Un-Men

Several Un-Men lurk in a graveyard from Swamp Thing

Not specifically referring to one particular villain, the Un-Men are a group of baddies that were genetically manipulated by Swampy's arch nemesis Anton Arcane. Like a mix between humans and animals, the freakish genetic monsters act as henchmen to do Arcane's evil bidding.

Being one of the most prolific enemies in the Swamp Thing universe, the Un-Men aren't the most powerful DC monsters, but they are numerous. They are frightening because of their subservient nature and the fact that they are willing to do the bidding of a heel like Arcane. Also, because of the unlimited possibilities of their mutations, the creators of the comic have presented some truly terrifying Un-Men over the years.

M'nagalah

Swamp Thing looks down at M'nagalah from Swamp Thing

Like a being straight from the twisted imagination of H.P. Lovecraft, M'nagalah is an inter-dimensional being that takes credit for all life in the universe. Found nesting in a mine shaft near Louisiana, M'nagalah attempts to possess Swamp Thing in order to control all life on earth.

Seen as a gigantic blob of tentacles and one gigantic eye, M'nagalah is the essence of comic book nightmare fuel. The fact that he hides out in a dark and scary place only helps to make him more like an imagined creature from a child's nightmare. While he was temporarily vanquished by Swamp Thing, that hasn't stopped him from further terrorizing the DC universe.

Blight

Blight holds a victim from Swamp Thing

As a member of the coolest villains from Justice League Dark, Blight possessed the body of Chris, a close friend of the Phantom Stranger. Blight is the physical manifestation of humanity's evil, and is therefore able to wield some dangerous powers.

The fact that it takes an entire team to defeat Blight makes him extra spooky, and on top of that, his insect-like appearance is chilling. Not a stranger to demonic forces, Swampy and the rest of the team are able to do battle with relative ease, but the soul that hangs in the balance is in mortal danger.

The Floronic Man

The Floronic Man screams from Swamp Thing

Unlike Swamp Thing, who uses his elemental status to bring balance to the earth, Jason Woodrue has his sights set on something entirely different. A brilliant scientist who studies plants, The Floronic Man made a pact with The Green after consuming some of Swamp Thing's tissue. Driven mad by rage, and emboldened by his new abilities, The Floronic Man set out to eradicate all animal life on earth.

Imbued with the same abilities as Swamp Thing, The Floronic Man offered a chilling challenge for the big green monster. Somewhat sympathetic towards Woodrue's mission, Swamp Thing is torn between the human and plant side of his soul. While many villains aim to destroy all life on earth, Woodrue is particularly frightening because he could actually do it.

Anton Arcane

Anton Arcane stands next to his Un-Men from Swamp Thing

Dabbling in evil that threatened to destroy the entire world, Anton Arcane is truly Swamp Thing's arch-nemesis. Obsessed with immortality from a young age, Anton put his knowledge of medicine and magic together in an attempt to live forever and saw Swamp Thing as a suitable host.

Even in death, Arcane continued to plague Swampy, and returned from Hell in the form of Abby's fiancé Mathew. Seemingly unstoppable, and with a thirst for power that is unrivaled by any comic villain, Arcane's schemes have no end to their depravity. While Swamp Thing has battled many strange creatures in his time, none were as darkly motivated as Arcane, and none proved to be as powerful.
