"Nobody Liked the Idea of Young Avengers": Marvel Editor its No-One Wanted Young Avengers Spin-Off (But How It Succeeded Can Inform Their MCU Debut)
According to a long-time Marvel editor, there was "skepticism" at Marvel about the Young Avengers before the debut of their original series.
The New Champions started as hypothetical character creations for a variant cover series, with Amaranth officially being created as a potential Scarlet Witch sidekick by artist Jen Bartel. As more of the characters from the variants continue to enter Marvel continuity in various ways, the New Champions team will finally assemble with Amaranth as one of its . After debuting in Scarlet Witch #6 with a frightened Agatha Harkness bringing the young sorceress to Wanda for help with training, Amaranth will clash with her mentor’s children and mark the first Young Avengers crossover with Marvel’s new class of teen superheroes.
Wanda’s Family Reunion Continues with Wiccan and Speed
Is the New Champion ing the Maximoff Family?
Scarlet Witch’s latest series has brought her together with various family , but the mother and sons reunion may have a wrench thrown into it in the form of Amaranth. Previously in the series, Wanda’s twin brother Pietro AKA Quicksilver helped protect her town from a violent threat, with Magneto’s other daughter Polaris ing the fight as well. With the series celebrating not only Wanda’s family but also her core ing cast, Wiccan and Speed’s appearance alongside their powerful mother is an exciting team-up to highlight Wanda as a parent as she becomes a caregiver for a new young hero.

X-Men’s New Era is the Perfect Moment to Turn Magneto’s Kids Into an Official Team
Magneto's family is immensely powerful, and his children have overcome their struggles enough to show the world what they're capable of together.
Speed recently made a brief appearance alongside his uncle in the miniseries that came before Wanda’s solo series, Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, also by Orlando and Tammetta. However, it has been a while since Wanda had a formal team-up with both of her twin sons. With the mysterious Amaranth being a sort of fourth wheel for the familial get-together, the New Champion could either be solidified as an unofficial part of the family or create a real rivalry between herself and Wanda’s offspring. As the solicitation teases Amaranth’s powers awakening, she may be able to challenge the family’s immense magical power.
Marvel’s Next Young Hero Group Builds Off the Young Avengers and Champions
With Amaranth taking her place in the New Champions, the Marvel Universe finally has a new powerful team of young superheroes in place of the Young Avengers and the original Champions team. Continuing a trend of Marvel launching new teen teams every decade, with the Young Avengers beginning in 2005 and the Champions in 2016, the New Champions series officially kicks off in early 2025. Along with Amaranth, a new Ghost Rider character named Fantasma, and a group of young heroes formerly brainwashed by Hydra, new sidekicks from the variants will officially debut as Marvel’s next generation of legacy superheroes.
Though they may be working together in the issue as they try to escape a twisted carnival setting, it seems that Amaranth will be battling for the attention and affection of Wanda against her sons. Wiccan and Speed are powerful heroes in their own right, especially Billy, since he inherited a power more similar to his mother than Tommy’s super-speed, like his uncle. However, as the former Young Avengers face off against one of the New Champions’ potential powerhouses, their relation to Scarlet Witch will be tested and Amaranth’s place will be officially established in Wanda’s family and Marvel lore.
Scarlet Witch #7 will be available December 11, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
