two Scream movies, he wrote The Faculty and created teen drama Dawson's Creek. One of the most popular characters from Scream is Randy, a movie nerd who helps define the rules of the horror genre for the other characters.
Incredibly, Randy managed to survive the end of Scream and returned once again for the 1997 sequel. Sadly, he only lasted until the midway point of Scream 2, where he's brutally stabbed to death in broad daylight. This moment upped the stakes in a major way and was one of the franchise's most shocking demise until the death of a certain legacy figure in Scream 2022. Scream 2 celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022, with Williamson revealing to EW he had some regrets about killing Randy Meeks.
Why Kevin Williamson Was Right To Kill Randy In Scream 2
Says the writer, "I love Randy, I would have given him a much bigger life had I known this franchise was going to live and live. I would have loved for him to be a legacy character." While it might have been fun to see where the horror rule-spouting Randy could have gone in later Scream movies - perhaps becoming a screenwriter or filmmaker - Williamson made the right call in killing him off. The writer revealed that since he knew killing the other three leads was off the table, so he had to turn to the "secondary" characters.
Says Williamson "I thought if you kill someone really important to the audience in the middle, it just ups the stakes." Randy's Scream 2 demise underlined the threat the killer posed and made viewers feel that any of the heroes could die. The fact Randy was so likable and an audience surrogate only made his death sting further. While it was no doubt a painful choice, slasher movies - especially sequels - need to make viewers feel on edge and feel that nobody is safe. Sadly, Randy drew the short straw for Scream 2's ensemble.
Randy's Scream 3 Cameo Was His Perfect Ending
While there was brief consideration given to Scream 3 via videotape. Randy's sister Martha (Heather Matarazzo) appears with impeccable timing to Neve Campbell's Sidney and co to deliver his tape, which explains the rules of a trilogy.
Randy reveals he recorded the tape in case he was killed during the events of Scream 2 - which proved prophetic. This cameo gave Randy his best ending in the saga, as it brought his film savviness to a new level while highlighting that his love for his friends ran so deep he recorded a tape to help them in the event of another Ghostface killer emerging. His death haunted the franchise moving forward also, so while Williamson may have regrets about it, Scream 2 made the right call.
