While filming 2022's Scream 4 in 2011, Craven, who served as the director for every movie in the series, was attached to helm the fifth one as well. Unfortunately, development was slow, and Craven's ing in 2015 seemed to indicate there wasn't much of a future for Scream. That changed last year, when Scream 5 officially got the greenlight under the direction of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
Taking the franchise back to its roots, the 2022 installment will be titled simply Scream. It introduces several new characters and features the returns of familiar ones as well, including Sidney Prescott (Neve Campell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Dewey Riley (Arquette). The logline for Scream reveals the movie will follow a young woman as she returns to her hometown just as it is terrorized by a string of murders from the new Ghostface killer.
There's a great deal of excitement surrounding Scream, but there's also a bittersweet tinge to the proceedings because of Craven's ing. Speaking to ET recently, Arquette revealed what it was like making the movie without the franchise's original director. "It was great. I mean, it's hard without Wes, you know, that was at the forefront," he said. Arquette then added that while he wasn't there on set with them, Craven's presence was felt in a major way:
But did feel his energy there, and certain moments and certain scenes, you just feel the wind blow and you're like, 'I don't know, maybe I’m like a little bit of a hippy at heart, but I I felt his energy there. It just brought up a lot of memories of Wes too.
For the returning stars, it's understandable that it would be difficult to face Scream 5 without Craven. Campbell even said she was initially hesitant about g on without Craven at the helm, but she was won over by Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett's enthusiasm for the series. By all s, Scream appears to be in good hands, and fans should be excited about what's in store. If Arquette and Campbell can both feel confident in the 2022 Scream, then this should be a reboot that manages to live up to expectations. Perhaps Craven really did give his blessing on set.
Right now, Scream is scheduled to premiere in January 2022. Fans are eager to get their first proper look at the movie, but the creative team has been very careful not to reveal too much too early. Multiple endings were created to preserve Ghostface's identity, and the first Scream trailer will arrive in theaters next week before arriving online. There's a certain level of suspense being applied to the promotion of this movie, and that's just how it should be. Craven would be proud.
